Trey Gowdy went off the reservation.

The former South Carolina Congressman dove into the debate about Joe Biden’s cognitive decline.

And Trey Gowdy stunned Fox News viewers with this unthinkable defense of Joe Biden.

Gowdy ripped special counsel Robert Hur for detailing Joe Biden’s senility in his report on Biden stealing and hoarding classified documents.

Hur said he wouldn’t recommend charges against Biden because a jury would see him as a “well-meaning” old man with a “poor memory.”

To back up his contention that Joe Biden was mentally incompetent to stand trial, Hur included Biden being unable to remember what years he served as Barack Obama’s Vice President or when his son Beau passed away from brain cancer.

Hur’s jarring recounting of Biden’s failing memory forced the media for the first time to devote real coverage to the fact that Joe Biden is senile.

This didn’t sit well with Gowdy who whined about Hur – and past special counsels – submitting reports that served as political indictments of the subject without actually filing any criminal charges.

On Fox News Special Report Gowdy falsely accused Hur of performing “opposition research for the Republican Party.”

“I think prosecutors ought to speak through indictments,” Gowdy stated. “What Jim Comey did with his press conference was wrong. Robert Mueller has no business weighing in on anything on whether or not a crime was committed. Rob Hur, the same analysis. So, I may be wrong, but at least I’m consistent. Prosecutors don’t speak to press conferences or reports . . . Rob Hur’s job was to write a confidential report, not do opposition research for the Republican Party. Prosecutors are held to a different standard. We’re not political hacks and they should not act like that.”

Gowdy’s co-panelist Brit Hume dismissed Gowdy’s complaint saying the law requires Hur to write a report and Attorney General Merrick Garland made it public so any criticism of Hur was misplaced.

“He filed a confidential report and the President’s Attorney General decided to release it,” Hume declared. “So, how is that on the prosecutor? I don’t think it is. It may be in keeping with our current standards of, you know, everything released, but, it certainly wasn’t up to Hur.”
