TikTok is the social media platform that’s taking the world by storm on its way to being the most downloaded app in the world.
While TikTok has exploded in popularity, serious concerns exist that the app is sending vast amounts of user information back to China.
The Chinese-based parent company of TikTok, ByteDance, has close ties to the communist government.
Chinese law requires that tech companies in the country assist the communist government with intelligence efforts.
TikTok could be used for a vast surveillance operation being run by the Communist Chinese Party.
Now, FBI Director Christopher Wray is sounding the alarm on the potential power that TikTok could gain over Americans.
During a hearing of the Senate Intelligence Committee, Wray said that TikTok could be used by the Chinese government to control software and data on millions of Americans electronic devices.
He said that TikTok could even be used to turn Americans against each other with manipulation efforts that are so subtle that even intelligence agencies couldn’t detect.
“It’s the control of the recommendation algorithm, which allows them to conduct influence operation,” Wray explained. “It’s the control of the software, which allows them to then have access to millions of devices.”
Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) asked “Could they use it to drive narratives, like to divide Americans against each other?”
Rubio pointed to a potential scenario where the Chinese use propaganda to manipulate American public opinion on controversial issues.
“We’re not sure that we would see many of the outward signs of it happening if it was happening,” Wray said. “This is a tool that is ultimately within the control of the Chinese government and to me it screams out with national security concerns.”
Wray said that the danger with TikTok is that no line exists between business and government in China.
Former President Donald Trump identified the national security risks and attempted to ban the app.
The ban was quickly reversed once Joe Biden took office.
A growing number of state governments have banned TikTok on state-issued devices.
Biden was late to the party and recently issued a ban on TikTok on devices issued by the federal government within 30 days.
A bill to give the President to ban or regulate TikTok and other technology from hostile countries was introduced into Congress.
Joe Biden is leading from the rear about the massive security threat posed by TikTok.
