Prince Harry has been on a crusade against his family.
His tell-all memoir inflamed tensions that were already roiling.
And Meghan Markle was horrified when she heard one sordid detail about Prince Harry.
Prince Harry’s memoir Spare was a smash hit that was full of all sorts of cringeworthy details, including a story about getting frostbite on his private parts.
In the book, Harry also told the story of the “older woman” who took his virginity.
But Harry was not expecting Sasha Walpole, the “older woman,” to come forward and confirm the account in his book.
Walpole, 40, was 19 years old at the time and Harry was 16.
Some expected the woman from Harry’s past to be many years old, a la Mrs. Robinson in The Graduate.
Royal reporter Kinsey Schofield speculated that Meghan Markle “is left feeling a little embarrassed . . . People are laughing at their expense . . . And Meghan is older than the ‘older woman’ Harry describes. Meghan has likely never hit the yoga mat harder.”
Walpole described Harry as a friend, and the two were drunk at the time.
She said in an interview, “It was instant, fiery, wham bam, between two friends. It was sparky because we shouldn’t have been doing it. He wasn’t ‘Prince Harry’ to me, this was Harry, my friend, and the situation had got a little bit out of control. It felt naughty, I suppose, in the sense that it shouldn’t be happening.”
Harry described the episode as a “quick ride.”
He wrote, “She liked horses, quite a lot, and treated me not unlike a young stallion. Quick ride, after which she’d smacked my rump and sent me to grace. Among the many things about it that were wrong. It happened in a grassy field behind a busy pub.”
Walpole coming forward called off the media dogs, who had been feverishly looking for the mystery woman from Harry’s past.
“It is awkward because of what Harry has written about me slapping his bum, really cringey,” she said. “It flared up because of the way Harry has written it. This is why I am in this situation.”
She added, “We didn’t set out to do it – it wasn’t premeditated and I didn’t know he was a virgin. There were no virgin vibes – he seemed to know what he was doing. It was quick, wild, exciting. We were both drunk. It wouldn’t have happened if we weren’t.”
The Walpole affair deflects from some of the more scurrilous claims made by Harry in the book and prior interviews.
The Sussex Royals’ messy separation from the family has been anything but a “quick ride.”
