Nancy Pelosi purports to be a good Catholic.
But her own bishop does not seem to agree.
Now the Archbishop who denied Pelosi communion received one shock from the Pope.
San Francisco Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone barred House Speaker Nancy Pelosi from communion because of her ungodly stance on abortion, which allows for abortion up to the point of birth.
Cordileone wrote in a letter to Pelosi, “[Y]ou are not to be admitted to Holy Communion, until such time as you publicly repudiate your advocacy for the legitimacy of abortion and confess and receive absolution of this grave sin in the sacrament of Penance.”
Not only is Pelosi’s abortion position anti-Catholic, it’s wildly out of step with the American people.
Approximately two-thirds of Americans oppose abortion in the second trimester, and 81% reject abortion in the third trimester.
Nevertheless, Pelosi received communion at a progressive Jesuit church in Washington, D.C. and blasted the Catholic Church as hypocritical for condemning abortion but not the death penalty for murderers.
Now Archbishop Cordileone was passed up for a promotion as Pope Francis chose a lesser-ranked priest for the position of Cardinal.
Just the News reported that “Pope Francis on Sunday announced the promotion of San Diego Bishop Robert McElroy to Cardinal, passing over the higher-ranked San Francisco Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone . . . When U.S. bishops were debating whether to change their policy on communion in 2021, McElroy warned against denying the sacrament to pro-choice politicians.”
So McElroy is in favor of pro-abortion politicians and Cordileone is not.
McElroy wrote in a Jesuit magazine, “The Eucharist is being weaponized and deployed as a tool in political warfare. This must not happen . . . The proposal to exclude pro-choice Catholic political leaders from the Eucharist is the wrong step . . . It will bring tremendously destructive consequences – not because of what it says about abortion, but because of what it says about the Eucharist.”
The move exemplifies the leftward tilt of the church, particularly under Pope Francis, who is a champion of multiple left-wing policies on everything from immigration to global warming.
Pope Francis has maintained a hardline pro-life stance, yet he passed over Cordileone in favor of a priest more amenable to pro-abortion Democrats.
Francis once remarked, “First question: is it okay to eliminate a human life to solve a problem? Second question: is it okay to hire a hitman to solve a problem? […] Last century, the whole world was scandalized by what the Nazis did to purify the race. Today, we do the same thing but with white gloves.”
That is certainly strong rhetoric, but it was not backed up in this specific instance.
