Ocasio-Cortez, who drives a $60,000 Tesla, routinely touts the alleged benefits of electric vehicles for the environment.
The soaring cost of gasoline is delivering a punch in the gut to drivers after President Joe Biden declared war on American energy production.
Democrats like Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg claim that electric vehicles are the solution to the pain at the pump drivers are feeling.
Now, reality is pouring cold water on one of the biggest green delusions held by Democrats.
For a growing number of electric vehicle owners it’s becoming more expensive to charge their cars than it would be to fill up with gas, even with gas prices through the roof.
The surging price of electricity under Biden is making it ridiculously expensive to charge electric vehicles in parts of New England.
Electric rates in the region have climbed nearly 30% since last summer, putting the squeeze on electric vehicle owners.
Massachusetts resident Matt Cain told CBS News that his electric bill doubled at the beginning of the year.
“We have a Prius Prime that we normally drive around town, and we drive most of it on electricity,” Cain said. “It’s now 50% more expensive than fueling it with gas.”
Given that electric vehicles cost an average price of $68,000, skyrocketing charging costs is a double whammy for their owners.
On the social media site Reddit, a New Hampshire resident said that there was more pain on the way as an electric vehicle owner.
“Went from an average of $220 a month electric bill . . . to now close to $400 a month and that’s with off peak charging, and it’s supposed to go up again significantly in February,” the user said.
Even at public charging stations, the cost is getting absurd according to electric vehicle driver Christopher Hogan.
During a vacation from Virginia to Maryland, Hogan found a charging station that cost 15 times the rate he was paying for electricity at home.
“It’s like these ATMs with a $15 fee,” Hogan told CBS.
One of the biggest justifications used by Democrats to push electric vehicles, cost savings, is going up in smoke for many owners.
In addition to the expense, electric vehicles don’t live up to their environmental hype.
Most of the electricity used to power them comes from burning fossil fuels and their massive batteries require minerals that take enormous amounts of energy to mine.
Electric vehicles are the latest green fantasy pushed by environmental extremists like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez that’s not ready for the real world.
