Tom Brady retired from the NFL prior to the 2023 season.
But there were always lingering thoughts that it wasn’t permanent.
Now Tom Brady made this huge announcement about an NFL comeback.
Tom Brady says a comeback is a possibility
Tom Brady is considered the GOAT quarterback thanks to winning seven Super Bowl titles.
Taking the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to a championship after leaving the New England Patriots and head coach Bill Belichick cemented Brady’s legend status.
But after being out of the game for one year, Brady sounds ready to jump back in.
“I’m not opposed to it,” Brady said on the DeepCuts podcast when asked if he would play again.
The only caution flag Brady threw was the fact that he’s now a minority owner of the Las Vegas Raiders and he wasn’t sure if league rules would allow him to play.
“I don’t know if they’re going to let me if I become an owner of an NFL team,” Brady added.
Brady cited Michael Jordan’s comeback in 2001 for the Washington Wizards after spending three years in retirement – ironically, Jordan was a minority owner of the Wizards at the time – could serve as his inspiration.
“But I don’t know,” Brady continued. “I’m always going to be in good shape, always be able to throw the ball. So, to come in for a little bit, like MJ coming back, I don’t know if they’d let me, but I wouldn’t be opposed to it.”
Brady waffles in retirement
After the Bucs fell short in the 2021 NFL playoffs, Brady announced a short-lived retirement before coming back for one more season to try and win another Super Bowl.
“These past two months I’ve realized my place is still on the field and not in the stands. That time will come. But it’s not now. I love my teammates, and I love my supportive family. They make it all possible. I’m coming back for my 23rd season in Tampa. Unfinished business,” Brady wrote.
When the Bucs flamed out in the playoffs the following season Brady announced he was retired for good.
“Good morning, guys, I’ll get to the point right away: I’m retiring for good,” Brady said in a video posted to Instagram. “I know the process was a pretty big deal last time, so when I woke up this morning I figured I’d just press record and let you guys know first. So I won’t be long-winded. I think you only get one super-emotional retirement essay, and I used mine up last year. So, really, thank you guys, so much, to every single one of you, for supporting me. My family, my friends, teammates, my competitors, I could go on forever, there’s too many. Thank you, guys, for letting me live my absolute dream. I wouldn’t change a thing. Love you all.”
Brady signed a 10-year $375 million contract to serve as Fox’s lead announcer for its NFL coverage, which was supposed to begin when Brady retired.
But Brady already put joining the broadcast booth off for one year.
It’s also clear Brady still has the itch to play football.
