Senate Democrat calls on Joe Biden to drop out of the race
Discussion in Democrat circles about President Joe Biden ending his campaign began before he wrapped up his catastrophic 90-minute debate against former President Donald Trump.
Multiple media outlets ran stories citing anonymous Democrat donors and elected officials who were ready to begin looking in another direction after the debate.
The feedback on Biden’s debacle was brutal.
“Democrats just committed collective suicide,” a Democrat strategist told NBC News. “Biden sounds hoarse, looks tired, and is babbling. He is reaffirming everything voters already perceived. President Biden can’t win. This debate is a nail in the political coffin.”
“It’s hard to argue that we shouldn’t nominate someone else,” a Democratic consultant stated.
But publicly, top Democrats stood by Biden in the aftermath of his debate disaster.
Former President Barack Obama, California Governor Gavin Newsom, and former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) came out in support of the embattled President.
But one longtime Senate colleague of Biden broke ranks and called him to step down.
Former U.S. Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA) served with Biden for more than 20 years, but the debate was enough for him.
“Last night was a disaster from which Biden cannot recover,” Harkin told Iowa Potluck. “He stood there with his mouth hanging open, head bowed down much of the time; it looked like someone put flour on his face for makeup.”
Harkin said that Biden’s decline from his March State of the Union address was startling.
“I also think all incumbent Democratic Senators should write to Biden asking him to release his delegates and step aside so the convention can choose a new candidate,” Harkin added. “A couple of Governors may need to do the same.”
Biden’s former longtime colleague wasn’t going to bite his tongue after watching in horror during the debate.
Harkin became one of the first prominent Democrats to call for the President to step down.
Democrat Party ranks are beginning to turn on Joe Biden
The unity that Democrats showed in the aftermath of the debate is starting to crumble.
Post-debate polls showed the disaster that was beginning to unfold.
Obama Associate Staff Secretary Joel Wertheimer said that both Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris needed to step aside to beat Trump.
“While I think Kamala would be better than Biden at this point, and is maybe the only alternative, I don’t think she has a much better shot,” Wertheimer wrote on X. “Anyway if you’re a Democrat who likes Biden and likes Harris and just wants to f***ing win, I do think it’s worth saying publicly that we do need somebody other than both of them.”
Representative Lloyd Doggett (D-TX) became the first elected Democrat to publicly call for Biden to step down.
The dam could be beginning to break for Joe Biden with no hope of turning his campaign around.
