Ilhan Omar Called Isra Hirsi a Hero for Cheering Communist Cuba While Cubans Starved in the Dark

Ilhan Omar watched her daughter get suspended from college for organizing anti-Israel riots – and called it heroic.

Now Isra Hirsi is in Havana at a five-star hotel while 11 million Cubans go without electricity – and Omar is calling that heroic too.

Hasan Piker Broadcast From His Five-Star Hotel During the Cuba Blackout

Hirsi flew to Cuba last weekend as part of the "Nuestra America" convoy – an international gathering of leftist personalities who descended on Havana to show "solidarity" with the Castro regime.

She was joined by Twitch streamer Hasan Piker, Code Pink militants, British socialist Jeremy Corbyn, and People's Forum agitator Manolo De Los Santos.

The timing was perfect – if you're a communist.

Cuba's power grid collapsed entirely that same weekend.

The Cuban Electric Union announced a total island-wide blackout Saturday – more than 20 hours a day without electricity for millions of people.

No lights. No refrigeration. No medicine that requires power to store.

Piker livestreamed from his room at the five-star Gran Hotel Bristol Meliá Collection while the neighborhood outside sat in darkness.

He blamed U.S. law for the luxury accommodations. The actual regulation prohibits Americans from staying at Cuban government-owned properties – it says nothing about five-star resorts.

Cuban exile Mayra Dominguez did the math: "More than 100 homes wouldn't be without power today if the Castro regime didn't spend on communist propaganda with the international left."

A video circulating among Latin American journalists appears to show convoy members making Cuban children dance in the street in exchange for food.

Breitbart News could not independently confirm the video's authenticity.

Code Pink and the People's Forum Have a Twenty Million Dollar Tie to Communist China

Hirsi describes herself on social media as a communist and identifies as an "angry black girl."

She was arrested and suspended from Barnard College in April 2024 for organizing an anti-Israel encampment at Columbia University. Omar called herself "enormously proud" then too.

The company Hirsi keeps in Havana is not random.

The People's Forum – whose chief agitator De Los Santos delivered speeches in Havana praising the Cuban regime – has received over $20 million from Neville Roy Singham, a U.S. tech billionaire living in Shanghai with documented ties to the Chinese Communist Party.

The House Ways and Means Committee launched a formal investigation in 2025, alleging the organization used its tax-exempt status to spread foreign propaganda while acting as a foreign agent.

Code Pink is co-founded by Singham's wife, Jodie Evans.

Rep. Chip Roy called it directly: the network is "very clearly operating unlawfully in terms of their engagement with foreign interests."

The convoy's organizing group, Progressive International, has an advisory board that includes Mariela Castro – the daughter of Raúl Castro, Cuba's actual power at age 94.

When dissident journalist Yoani Sánchez – placed under house arrest by the regime just last week – condemned the convoy for treating Cuba as a "theme park," the convoy said nothing.

Sixty-Seven Years of the Same Lie

American leftists have been running solidarity trips to Cuba for decades.

In the 1970s, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass made the same pilgrimage – visiting Castro's Cuba at least eight times with the Venceremos Brigade.

The script never changes: show up, stay in hotels the locals can't access, praise the revolution, fly home.

Sixty-seven years of communist rule have produced poverty, hunger, a failing power grid, and a government that imprisons journalists for reporting the truth.

Cuban dissident Manuel Cuesta Morúa put it plainly: the Western left continues to "support a revolution that has deliberately created the worst conditions of life" for the Cuban people, particularly Afro-Cubans.

The convoy's own website made no mention of communist policy as a cause of Cuban misery. It blamed the United States.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio – the son of Cuban immigrants – said Tuesday what the convoy will never say: Cuba needs to get "new people in charge" in Havana.

Isra Hirsi flew home. The Cubans stayed in the dark.

And Ilhan Omar posted that she was "incredibly proud."
