You Won’t Believe the Reason a Virginia Man Duct Taped His Wife to a Chair and Put Her in the Basement

Terry Ward’s grandfather would have been ashamed of him.

Now Ward is sitting in a jail cell, and his wife is sitting with a doctor looking at the bruises on her arms.

And you won’t believe the reason a Virginia man duct taped his wife to a chair and put her in the basement.

What He Actually Did

Officers arrived at the Ward home in Richmond, Virginia on October 11 after his wife managed to call them.

What they found was a man with a simple explanation for everything.

He had duct-taped his wife to a chair.

He had put her in the basement.

He had gone back upstairs to watch the game.

“According to Richmond Police, officers were called to the home around 11:30 p.m. for a reported domestic disturbance,” the police report read. “Officers arrived and took a report from an adult female,” the report continued. “In a criminal complaint obtained by Virginia Statewide Incidents, the responding officer wrote that the woman reported her husband had tied her to a chair using tape in the basement of their home.”

The police report puts it plainly: “Terry stated that he did indeed tie his wife to a chair and place her down in the basement.”

His wife told officers she was trapped in that chair for nearly an hour.

She had bruises and contusions on her arms.

“The complaint further states that the woman had marks and tape markings around both of her arms,” the police report read. “She told police she believed she had been tied to the chair for approximately 30 to 45 minutes.”

Ward was charged with abduction and misdemeanor assault and battery against a family or household member.

He did not deny a single word of it.

The Part That Should Bother Everyone

There is something worse than what Ward did.

It is how he talked about it.

He did not look panicked when the officers showed up.

He did not scramble for an explanation.

He just told them – matter-of-factly – that he had tied his wife to a chair in the basement because the game was on.

He said it like it was the most reasonable thing in the world.

That level of calm tells you something.

Men who do something they know is wrong usually flinch when the police show up.

Men who have normalized controlling another human being explain themselves like they are describing how they fixed a leaky faucet.

Ward explained himself.

This Is What Happens When Men Have No Standards Left

A generation ago, the men in Terry Ward’s neighborhood would have handled this before the police ever got involved.

His father would have been horrified.

His brothers would have had words with him.

His pastor would have known his name by Sunday.

There were community guardrails – informal ones, traditional ones – that made men like Terry Ward think twice before treating their wives like an inconvenience to be managed with hardware store supplies.

Those guardrails are gone now.

We replaced them with nothing.

And so a 64-year-old man in Richmond, Virginia – old enough to know exactly what kind of husband his own father was – duct-taped his wife to a chair on a Sunday afternoon and thought the only real problem was the interruption to his football game.

Virginia prosecutors have everything they need to put Terry Ward away.

The abduction charge alone carries up to five years.

The assault charge adds another year.

Ward wanted a quiet Sunday.

He is going to get a long, quiet stretch of days to think about the kind of man he turned out to be.
