Vladimir Putin Just Freed a Jailed American After Donald Trump Made One Phone Call

Russia spent four and a half years holding a 73-year-old Michigan schoolteacher in a penal colony.

Joe Biden refused to do anything about it.

But Vladimir Putin just freed a jailed American teacher after Donald Trump made one phone call.

Putin Folded to the One Man He Respects

Trump told reporters earlier this week exactly what he was doing.

"I've been talking to President Putin about Mr. Hubbard," he said from the White House. "I've been talking to him at length. I've asked him to release him."

That's it.

No international tribunal.

No years of failed diplomacy.

No Nobel Peace Prize speeches about multilateral frameworks.

Trump picked up the phone, told Putin what he wanted, and Putin blinked.

Witkoff confirmed the release Wednesday after meeting directly with Putin in St. Petersburg – the same city, the same envoy, the same formula that has delivered every time.

Donald Trump announced it on Truth Social.

“Stephen is on his way back home and will soon be with his family,” President Donald Trump said via Truth Social. “The United States was not required to give anything in return — an unprecedented situation for Russia.”

What Russia Did to This Man

Hubbard was 69 years old when Russian forces grabbed him in eastern Ukraine in April 2022.

He'd been living in Izyum since 2014 – a retired English teacher from Michigan who'd spent decades abroad teaching kids in Japan and Cyprus before settling in Ukraine.

Russia accused him of fighting as a mercenary.

The trial was closed.

No consular access was granted.

Washington, DC had almost no information about the proceedings.

None of that stopped Moscow.

They put a 72-year-old man in a glass cage in Moscow City Court in October 2024 and sentenced him to six years and ten months in a penal colony.

A Ukrainian military officer imprisoned alongside Hubbard before sentencing described what happened inside those walls.

Russia's guards didn't just imprison him – they ran electricity through him, starved him, and beat him until he couldn't stand without difficulty.

That's what the State Department meant when they officially classified him as "wrongfully detained."

The Record Trump Is Building

Donald Trump has been systematically dismantling the fiction that Russia holds all the cards.

Marc Fogel – a Pennsylvania schoolteacher imprisoned over three years on drug charges – came home in February 2025 after Witkoff flew to Moscow and flew him out on his own plane.

Ksenia Karelina – jailed for making a $52 donation to a Ukrainian charity – was freed in April 2025.

Robert Gilman – a former Marine originally sentenced to seven years – was released in August 2026. Witkoff thanked Putin directly and credited Trump's "extraordinary leadership."

Now Hubbard.

Biden's team couldn't move Putin on a single one of them.

They offered diplomatic patience.

What Putin understood was weakness – and he kept Americans in cages for as long as weakness lasted.

Senators Jim Risch and Mike Crapo of Idaho had been sounding the alarm on Hubbard since Hostage Week earlier this year, pressing publicly for his release.

Their pressure kept the name alive.

Trump closed the deal.

What This Actually Proves

Every time Washington, DC's foreign policy establishment told you Trump was destabilizing America's position in the world, a 73-year-old man was rotting in a Russian penal colony.

Putin understands one thing: leverage.

Trump has leverage because Putin believes Trump will use it.

That's not a character flaw.

That's exactly what the last four and a half years required – and what Biden could never deliver.

Stephen Hubbard's family gets him back.

That's what winning looks like.
