Kevin Costner had a messy public spit from the hit show Yellowstone.

That veteran actor decided he needed to go in a new direction.

Now Kevin Costner is staring down this scary situation after Yellowstone

Kevin Costner’s new movie is struggling at the box office

Veteran actor Kevin Costner had a career renaissance when he took the role of John Dutton on the Paramount Network smash hit Yellowstone in 2018.

He picked up a Golden Globe award for Best Actor – Television Series Drama last year for his work on the show.

But Costner had his sights on a return to the big screen.

The Dances with Wolves actor had an ugly public split from Yellowstone

Yellowstone’s producers claim it was because of scheduling issues from his new movie Horizon: An America Saga, while he claimed it was from a lack of scripts.

Horizon is a passion project that Costner has spent 30 years working on the idea for.

He co-wrote, directed, and starred in the movie, which tells the story of the settling of the American West.

The 12-hour epic is going to spread across four movies.

And he reportedly put $38 million of his own money to make it so far.

“I’ve mortgaged 10 acres on the water in Santa Barbara where I was going to build my last house,” Costner told Deadline. “It has thrown my accountant into a f ** *ing conniption fit. But it’s my life, and I believe in the idea and the story.”

Vanity Fair reported that he’s willing to put in $100 million to make sure the entire series gets made.

Costner said he was inspired by movies like the classic 1962 western How the West Was Won

Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1 is off to a bad start at the box office after it only took in $11 million on its opening weekend.

Most reviews pan the movie, but some call it a potential classic.

Chapter 2 is coming to theaters this August, and the third film is currently in production.

But the Horizon franchise could find its salvation in streaming.

“The streaming potential down the road is huge for this franchise,” Comscore chief box office analyst Paul Degarabedian said. “[It] has appeal among the older demographics, for whom this type of movie is in their wheelhouse.”

Horizon actor defends the movie

The first Horizon movie is three hours long, which is out of place in today’s Hollywood.

Actor Michael Rooker, who stars in the movie, defended it from critics.

“We’re used to 90-minute movies, everything’s 90 minutes. Oh, come on. Give me a break,” Rooker told TMZ.

“You know, let’s watch a movie that actually tells a story, where you learn about the people and you grow to like them or hate them, and it’s not fast cut-cut-cut,” Rooker added.

Costner said that he was happy with how the movie turned out.

“Would I love that it would be highly, highly successful? Of course, I’d like that,” Costner said. “My ego would like that; everyone would like that. But I am happiest that the movie that you and I are talking about looks the way I want it to look.”

Fans will have to judge for themselves whether Kevin Costner made the right decision to leave Yellowstone behind to make Horizon.
