Jose Ibarra murdered Laken Riley on that same stretch of Georgia campus two years ago.
Now another woman walking alone near UGA has been attacked – and the man who did it had already been banned from campus.
A judge is going to have to explain how Tydarius Wingfield was still roaming downtown Athens.
How Tydarius Wingfield Ended Up Near UGA With Three Prior Arrests and an Active Probation Ban
On the night of February 28, a UGA student was walking home through downtown Athens just before 2 a.m.
Tydarius Wingfield, 19, approached her.
He offered to walk her home safely.
She didn't know him.
He forced her behind a building on North Thomas Street and raped her.
Police charged Wingfield with kidnapping, aggravated sexual battery, battery and rape.
He is sitting in jail without bond.
Here is what makes this worse.
Court records show Wingfield faced battery charges as far back as June 2024.
He was back in handcuffs in April 2025 for stealing a scooter.
In November 2025 – just three months before the rape – he pleaded guilty to theft by taking.
A Georgia court sentenced him to a year of probation, 40 hours of community service, and a ban from all University of Georgia property.
He was on active probation with a court-ordered UGA property ban the night he followed a student down a dark street.
Laken Riley Was Murdered at UGA Two Years Ago and Athens Georgia Still Has a Crime Problem
This is the same city, the same university community, where Laken Riley went for a morning jog in February 2024 and never came back.
Jose Ibarra – a Venezuelan national in the country illegally – saw her on the trail, chased her down, dragged her roughly 60 feet into the woods, and beat her to death.
Ibarra was convicted and sentenced to life without parole.
His case changed the country.
The Laken Riley Act passed Congress, requiring ICE detention of illegal immigrants arrested for theft or violent crimes.
Under that law alone, the Trump administration has arrested 17,500 illegal immigrants in the first year of the second term.
Georgia hasn't forgotten Riley.
Her father, Jason Riley, filed a $1 million wrongful death lawsuit against the University System of Georgia this year – arguing the school failed to warn students after Ibarra had been spotted spying on a student in a UGA dorm the same morning he killed her.
Now, less than two years later, another UGA student is a rape victim.
And the man accused of doing it had a criminal record, was actively serving probation, and had been explicitly ordered to stay away from all UGA property.
A Georgia Court Gave Tydarius Wingfield Probation and a UGA Campus Ban He Simply Ignored
This is the part that should make people furious.
The Athens-Clarke County court system watched Tydarius Wingfield rack up arrests for battery and theft and responded with probation and community service.
A judge ordered him to stay off UGA property entirely.
Nobody enforced it.
Nobody stopped him from prowling downtown near UGA students at 1:30 in the morning while technically under court supervision.
The Real Time Crime Center cameras did their job.
Athens police did their job – they tracked Wingfield across downtown and had him in custody within hours of the attack.
The failure didn't happen after the rape.
It happened in November 2025, when a Georgia court looked at a man with two prior arrests and an escalating criminal pattern and decided community service was sufficient.
ACCPD data shows Athens has averaged 59 rapes per year over the last five years.
That's not a city with a random crime problem.
That's a city where courts keep handing second and third chances to men who use them to find new victims.
Wingfield had already been caught twice.
Athens gave him a year of probation.
A UGA student paid the price.
