Standing outside the Oval Office on Tuesday, Trump laid it out simply.
"He's been very nice about this," Trump said of Xi. "In all fairness, he gets like, 60% of his oil from Hormuz. And he's been, I think he's been very respectful. We haven't been challenged by China. They don't challenge us."
Read that again.
Trump didn't threaten China.
He didn't warn them.
He just stated a fact – Xi knows where his energy comes from – and let the implication hang in the air.

That's leverage. And every leader in the world heard it.
This comes as U.S. military ships have come under fire in the Strait of Hormuz, part of Trump's "Project Freedom" operation to keep the waterway open against Iranian threats.
China buys roughly a third of Iran's oil exports and has done exactly nothing to interfere.
The Iran Ultimatum Nobody Is Talking About
While the media focused on Trump's relationship with Xi, the president delivered a blunt warning to Tehran that most reporters glossed over.
"Oh, they don't make a deal? They won't be successful," Trump said Tuesday. "They'll go very quickly and methodically. Believe me, it'll be very easy."
That's not bluster.
That's a president who just sent warships into the Strait of Hormuz telling a regime that is "trying to survive" – his words – that survival is optional.
Iran has spent forty years testing American presidents.
They found weakness in Carter. They exploited Obama's nuclear deal desperation.
They ran circles around Biden, funding proxy attacks across the Middle East while his team begged for negotiations.
Trump is a different equation.

Trump's May 14-15 meeting with Xi in Beijing has been in the works since March. Melania will travel with him.

That's a full diplomatic reset happening in real time – while American ships are taking fire in the Persian Gulf.
The last time a sitting American president flew into Beijing with this kind of leverage was never.
Nixon needed China more than China needed Nixon. Reagan never went. George W. Bush went looking for trade cooperation.
Trump is arriving with China's energy calculus in one hand and a carrier group in the other.
Xi is calling it "very respectful."
That's what respect looks like when the alternative is watching your economy seize up because your oil supply just became a warzone.
