And Troy Aikman just made one announcement that left Cowboys fans furious.
Hall of Fame Quarterback Lands First Front Office Role With Rival Team
The Miami Dolphins announced Thursday that Troy Aikman will serve as a consultant during their search for a new general manager.
Aikman won't take a permanent position with the organization but will advise owner Stephen Ross throughout the hiring process.
Aikman will sit in on interviews and provide Miami with an outside perspective after the franchise parted ways with Chris Grier in October.
"The Miami Dolphins have brought on Hall-of-Fame QB and ESPN analyst Troy Aikman as a consultant to advise the organization on its general manager search process," ESPN's Adam Schefter reported. "It is not a permanent role, but he will be an advisor throughout the process for the Dolphins' next GM."¹
Dolphins ownership wanted someone with extensive connections who could bring fresh eyes to their dysfunctional operation.
Aikman fit the bill after building relationships across all 32 teams during his Hall of Fame playing career and two decades as ESPN's lead NFL analyst.
Dolphins Desperate After 25-Year Playoff Win Drought
Miami fired Grier after the team stumbled to a 2-7 start this season following a humiliating 28-6 loss to the Baltimore Ravens.
The decision came less than 24 hours after Thursday Night Football exposed the Dolphins as a complete disaster in front of a national audience.
Grier compiled a 77-80 record during his nearly decade-long tenure as general manager with three playoff appearances but zero postseason victories.²
Miami's 25-year playoff win drought stands as the longest active streak in the NFL.
The franchise hasn't won a playoff game since 2000 when Dan Marino was still suiting up for them.
Ross had already handed the keys to a promising roster featuring stars like wide receiver Tyreek Hill and quarterback Tua Tagovailoa.
Grier wasted the opportunity by drafting poorly and making terrible personnel decisions that left Miami without depth at critical positions like offensive line.
The team went 8-9 last season despite having a supposedly elite offense before collapsing even further this year.
Aikman criticized head coach Mike McDaniel during Miami's Week 15 loss to Pittsburgh for showing no sense of urgency while trailing late.
That criticism came just weeks before the Dolphins came calling about the GM search.
Cowboys Fans Watch Dream Slip Away
Dallas supporters have spent years begging for Jerry Jones to bring Aikman back to the organization in a front office role.
Jones has served as the Cowboys general manager since purchasing the team in 1989 with disastrous results.
Dallas hasn't reached a Super Bowl since the 1995 season when Aikman won his third championship.
The franchise has become a laughingstock that can't get past the divisional round despite having loads of talent.
Aikman seemed like the perfect candidate to take over personnel decisions from Jones.
The former quarterback delivered three Super Bowl championships to Dallas before transitioning into broadcasting.
But Aikman admitted recently that his window to become a general manager has likely closed.
"Will it come along at some point? Maybe, I doubt it, but maybe," Aikman said during an appearance on the Sports Business Radio podcast last month. "As I've often said, if it doesn't…there will be a part of me that always wonders as to whether or not I could have done the job. I'd like to think I could and would be good at it. But unless you do it, it's just talk."³
Now Aikman is testing the waters with a division rival while Jones continues running the Cowboys into the ground.
The Dolphins get the benefit of Aikman's football knowledge and league-wide connections without making a permanent commitment.
If the consulting role goes well, it could open the door for Aikman to pursue similar opportunities with other teams down the road.
Cowboys fans watching their franchise icon help fix a rival organization while Dallas continues to flounder under Jones has to sting.
