Taylor Sheridan built an empire by keeping audiences hooked on every twist and turn of the Yellowstone universe.
But his latest move has left even die-hard fans scratching their heads.
And Taylor Sheridan just pulled off one of the most confusing moves in television history.
Sheridan's Madison spinoff is filming Season 2 before Season 1 ever aired
Hollywood operates on a simple formula: make a show, air the show, see if anyone watches, then decide whether to make more.
Taylor Sheridan threw that playbook in the trash this week.
Downtown Dallas transformed into Manhattan on Tuesday night as production crews shut down Main Street and Ervay Street from 6:30 p.m. to 2 a.m., with NYPD patrol cars and yellow taxi cabs rolling through the closed streets while cameras captured footage for The Madison, Sheridan's mysterious Yellowstone spinoff starring Michelle Pfeiffer.¹
The weirdest part? Those scenes were for Season 2.²
Paramount hasn't announced a premiere date for Season 1.
Sheridan started filming The Madison in Montana back in August 2024.³
The production then moved to Texas in November and December of last year to shoot additional scenes.⁴
David Glasser, the CEO of 101 Studios, said in August 2025 that The Madison would start shooting its second season in September despite the first season never airing and no official second season order existing.⁵
Kurt Russell joined the cast in September, though nobody's sure if he's in Season 1, Season 2, or both.⁶
Paramount describes The Madison as "a heartfelt study of grief and human connection following a New York City family in the Madison River valley of central Montana."⁷
Pfeiffer plays Stacy Clyburn, the head of a New York family forced to rebuild their lives in Montana after tragedy strikes.⁸
Matthew Fox, Patrick J. Adams, Beau Garrett, Ben Schnetzer, Amiah Miller, and Elle Chapman round out the cast.
The show has been shrouded in secrecy since development began years ago.
They've managed to film an entire first season and part of Season 2 without any major leaks about plot details or connections to the main Yellowstone storyline.
Nobody knows how this fits into the Yellowstone universe
The Madison is officially a Yellowstone spinoff, but that's where the clarity ends.
The show was originally called 2024 and positioned as the first present-day sequel to Yellowstone.⁹
Matthew McConaughey was attached to star before scheduling conflicts forced him out.¹⁰
Now with Pfeiffer leading the cast, the show follows the McIntosh family instead of the Duttons.
None of the characters from The Madison appeared in the Yellowstone series finale that aired in December 2024.¹¹
The closest connection came when Beth and Rip announced they were moving to a new ranch near Dillon, Montana – which happens to be in the Madison Valley where this spinoff takes place.¹²
Director Christina Alexandra Voros, who worked on Yellowstone before moving to The Madison, described the connection as seeing Montana "through a completely different lens."¹³
"There are parallels in the scope of landscape and a human being's place in that space, but it's coming at it from a completely different point of view," Voros explained.¹⁴
That's not exactly a clear answer about how this ties into the Dutton family saga that defined Yellowstone for seven seasons.
Sheridan has built his television empire on keeping secrets until he's ready to reveal them.
But filming a second season before audiences even see the first? That's a level of confidence that borders on arrogance.
Or maybe Sheridan knows something we don't about what he's created with The Madison.
Paramount insiders reportedly indicated the show would receive an early renewal for a second season before the first even premiered.¹⁵
That suggests the network brass have seen what Sheridan shot and believe they've got another hit on their hands.
The production schedule makes more sense when you consider Sheridan's other projects currently shooting in Texas.
Landman has been filming in Fort Worth and Dallas, while another spinoff called Dutton Ranch recently used downtown Dallas to stand in for Chicago.¹⁶
Sheridan keeps his production teams working continuously, moving from one project to the next without pause.
That efficiency has allowed him to build multiple shows simultaneously while maintaining quality across his entire television empire.
Y: Marshals, starring Luke Grimes reprising his role as Kayce Dutton, premieres in March 2026.¹⁷
Dutton Ranch, featuring Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser as Beth and Rip, is also expected sometime in 2026.¹⁸
Sheridan has turned the traditional Hollywood model upside down by filming seasons before airing episodes and keeping massive productions secret from the press and public.
It's either genius or madness, and we won't know which until The Madison finally hits screens.
