Stephen A Smith Told the Progressive Left to Shut the Hell Up About Voter ID

Chuck Schumer just compared a basic voter ID requirement to Jim Crow.

And now one of the most recognizable Democrats in American media just told Schumer's crowd to shut up.

Wait until you hear exactly what he said about their real reason for fighting it.

The Moment That Has Liberals Fuming

Speaking on his SiriusXM show Straight Shooter Wednesday, the ESPN star didn't mince words.

"Let me state for the record, you should have a damn ID," Smith said. "I have no problem with the demand for an ID to vote. You need an ID for every damn thing else."

Then he aimed directly at the left wing of his own party.

"To the progressive left, shut the hell up."

Smith pointed to New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani – the democratic socialist who won the mayor's office last year – demanding two forms of ID just to shovel snow in the city.

Two IDs to shovel snow.

Zero IDs to vote.

Smith didn't miss it.

"You ain't in no position to be b——- about how he wants IDs and the GOP wants IDs for votes. Shut up. Nobody wants to hear that."

Democrats Are Blocking What Their Own Voters Support

Here's the part the mainstream media won't tell you.

The Democrats fighting the SAVE America Act aren't representing their voters.

They're defying them.

Pew Research found that 83% of Americans – including 71% of Democratic voters and 76% of Black voters – support requiring government-issued photo ID to vote.

Schumer heard those numbers and compared the bill to Jim Crow anyway.

Senate Republicans called his bluff this week, offering a standalone voter ID amendment to put Democrats on record.

Schumer blocked it. Every Democrat voted no.

Smith saw exactly what that means.

Earlier this month he said on his show what others in his party won't: "It's not lost on me that the Democrats just want votes from ANYBODY they can get it from. And they don't mind letting some ILLEGALS vote either. And that's INEXCUSABLE!"

The SAVE America Act passed the House in February along party lines.

It would require proof of citizenship to register and photo ID to vote – the standard that exists in virtually every other democracy on Earth.

California has gone the other direction.

Gavin Newsom signed a law in September 2024 banning local governments from requiring voter ID at all.

Smith learned that just last week from Rep. Kevin Kiley on the same show.

"What!? That's why the SAVE Act has been proposed right there," Smith said when Kiley explained the state doesn't require ID to register or to vote. "I thought every state just showed an ID … little did I know."

This Is Bigger Than One Commentator

Stephen A. Smith is not a conservative.

That's what makes this matter.

When a high-profile Black Democrat – with an audience that skews younger and less conservative than Fox News – goes on national radio and tells the progressive left to shut up about voter ID, the left's argument collapses.

Democrats have spent years claiming voter ID is a racist dog whistle designed to suppress minority votes.

That argument requires minority voters to believe they're too incompetent to obtain an ID.

Pew found 76% of Black voters reject that premise entirely.

Smith isn't the only Democrat breaking ranks.

Senator John Fetterman has backed voter ID publicly.

Senator Cory Booker told CNN he'd support a clean voter ID bill. New Jersey already has one.

Democrats have blocked the SAVE America Act because it closes the door on anyone voting who shouldn't be – and that door is worth something to them.

When the guy they counted on to play the race card instead tells his own party to shut up, the game is over.

They just haven't admitted it yet.
