Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham had been watching the news about strange objects being thrown at WNBA players during games this season.
The league has dealt with a disturbing trend of sex toys being hurled onto courts during live gameplay.
This bizarre behavior had already occurred twice in recent weeks – first in Atlanta on July 29 and again in Chicago on August 1.
Cunningham took to social media to express her concerns about the escalating situation.
"Stop throwing dildos on the court… you’re going to hurt one of us," she posted on X on Friday.
The post showed she was genuinely worried about player safety and was trying to prevent further incidents.
Unfortunately for Cunningham, her worst fears were about to come true in the most ironic way possible.
Podcast prediction becomes reality
During Tuesday’s episode of her podcast, Cunningham had addressed the growing issue of inappropriate objects being thrown onto courts.
She speculated about what would happen if a player actually got hit by one of these items.
"I just know how things go viral now, and I just know if that thing like even came from like the rafters or bows and just slap me right in the face, I could never, I could, that would be what I’d be known for life," Cunningham said on her podcast. "And yeah, it could break a f***in nose."
Her mother had even warned her about the possibility, texting her "watch out for flying d***os tonight" instead of her usual good luck message.
Hours later, during Tuesday night’s game against the Los Angeles Sparks, Cunningham’s fears became reality.
Video footage appeared to show Cunningham being hit by what looked like a green sex toy during the final minutes of the second quarter as the Fever prepared to inbound the ball.
Third incident in recent weeks
This marked the third time in recent weeks that a green sex toy has been thrown onto a WNBA court, creating a disturbing trend across the league.
The Fever lost to the Sparks 100-91, adding insult to injury for Cunningham and her team.
After the game, Cunningham made light of the bizarre situation by resharing her Friday social media post with the message, "This did not age well."
The timing of the incident – occurring on the same day she had discussed her fears on her podcast – created an almost unbelievable coincidence.
The league has taken these incidents seriously, with one person already facing criminal charges for a previous incident.
League cracks down on dangerous behavior
The WNBA announced that a 23-year-old man, Delbert Carver, was arrested and booked into Clayton County jail in Georgia for throwing a sex toy during a previous game.
Carver is facing charges of disorderly conduct, public indecency/indecent exposure, and criminal trespass for his stunt.
He was released on bond late Sunday, and his case is currently pending.
The WNBA issued a statement emphasizing that safety in their venues remains the league’s highest concern, noting that any objects thrown toward the court create risks for everyone in attendance.
The league has implemented strict consequences for fans who engage in this behavior.
According to WNBA Arena Security Standards, fans who throw objects onto the court face immediate ejection, a minimum one-year arena ban, plus potential arrest and criminal prosecution.
