Senate Democrats Kept the Shutdown Going to Defund an Agency That Already Has 75 Billion Dollars

A TSA officer in Atlanta showed up to work Wednesday and checked the food drive box for a $20 grocery gift card.

He has done this for 40 days while Senate Democrats insist the shutdown is about protecting Americans from ICE.

John Fetterman just told his own party what every Democrat already knows – and nobody in that caucus will say it out loud.

The Witness His Own Party Wishes Would Go Away

Fetterman didn't come out swinging on Wednesday because he finally got fed up.

He's been fed up since February 14 – the day funding lapsed and every Senate Democrat except him voted to let it happen.

He voted to reopen it. They blocked him. He voted again. They blocked him again. He voted a third time Wednesday. The tally: 54-46, one Democrat in favor.

Fetterman.

"I was the only Democrat through this entire thing to refuse to shut our government down," he said last week on The Record with Greta Van Susteren. "This is wrong."

He said it again Wednesday on Hannity: "These are not wealthy people. They earn around $50,000 a year. That should be our wheelhouse. They're union government workers."

His party has heard this for 40 days. His party does not care.

What Democrats Are Actually Doing

Chuck Schumer stood at a Senate podium Wednesday and called his latest proposal a "good faith offer."

His good faith offer included nine new demands – including banning ICE officers from wearing masks and requiring judicial warrants for every enforcement action.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune called it "not even close to being real." Sen. James Lankford was blunter: "One more thing, one more thing, one more thing."

Here's what none of Schumer's press conferences mention.

ICE is already funded. The One Big Beautiful Bill gave ICE $75 billion – meaning the entire premise of the Democrat shutdown strategy is a fiction.

Shutting down DHS doesn't defund ICE. It defunds TSA. It defunds FEMA. It defunds the Coast Guard.

Fetterman said it plainly: "That vote to shut DHS down will have no functional impact on ICE because they have that $75 billion from the big beautiful bill."

460 TSA officers have quit since February 14.

TSA employees have worked 87 days without pay in fiscal year 2026 – across multiple shutdowns – with nearly $1 billion in back wages owed by Friday.

Callout rates have spiked above 50% at multiple airports during the Spring Break travel surge.

Democrats know all of this. They've known it for weeks. And they keep moving the goalposts anyway.

The Real Reason Democrats Won't Budge

Fetterman gave the diagnosis on Friday and it's the most damning line any Democrat has said out loud this year.

"The Democrats are afraid of their base to just tell them, 'Hey, we're gonna do the right thing. We're gonna reopen this.'"

Not because they believe the shutdown is achieving anything.

Not because they think TSA officers deserve to go unpaid. Because progressive activists demand total resistance – and Democratic senators are too terrified of a primary challenge to govern.

This is the Democrat Party in 2026. Schumer gets interrupted at press conferences by Bernie Sanders while TSA workers check food drive boxes for $20 grocery gift cards.

The longest government shutdown in American history – 43 days last fall – ended when Fetterman and a handful of Democrats finally broke ranks.

Now Democrats are on track to shatter that record, with Senate recess starting Friday and betting markets pricing the shutdown running past April 13.

Fetterman called it "fundamentally wrong" on Wednesday.

He said federal workers are "selling their blood" and being forced into pay loans to survive. He told his colleagues to "put the country ahead of the party."

Fetterman is useful here not as a hero but as a witness – a Democrat confirming what Republicans have been saying for 40 days.

The shutdown was never about protecting anyone from ICE.

It was about Democratic senators being more afraid of their base than of TSA officers sleeping in their cars.

They know it. Fetterman just said it.

That's why they wish he'd stop talking.
