Amazon bought the Hollywood studio Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer which owns the rights to Bond in 2022 for $8.5 billion.
James Bond has been on hiatus since actor Daniel Craig played 007 for the final time in the 2021 film No Time to Die.
Producer Barbara Broccoli and her half-brother Michael Wilson control the rights to the James Bond movie franchise through their Eon Productions.
She is in a standoff with Amazon over the future of James Bond because of what the Big Tech company wants to do with the character.
“These people are f***ing idiots,” Broccoli told her friends about dealing with Amazon executives.
Broccoli keeps tight control over the Bond franchise down to the scripts and who the next actor will be to replace Craig as 007.
Amazon wants to use the Bond character to make spinoff TV shows and movies.
The company pitched Broccoli on the idea of making a TV show for streaming with a female James Bond, a spinoff show based on the MI6 secretary Miss Moneypenny, and a TV series for James Bond.
Broccoli shot down all of these ideas off the bat.
She’s always tried to protect Bond from the overexposure that’s ruined some franchises like Star Wars after Disney bought the rights from its creator George Lucas.
James Bond could be on hiatus for a while
There were discussions about making the next 007 a woman, which Broccoli immediately rejected.
Broccoli represents the old-school Hollywood way of making movies that prioritize protecting the brand while Amazon makes its decisions on algorithms and internal data.
Daniel Craig credited her for staying true to her roots when she and Wilson received honorary Academy Awards.
“Many people and organizations have tried to put their own footprint on Bond,” Craig said. “I admire your integrity in holding on to your singular vision as you brought Bond into the 21st century.”
Broccoli didn’t mention Amazon in her acceptance speech.
She doesn’t want to make another Bond movie with Amazon.
There hasn’t been a story, script, or a new Bond picked to replace Craig.
Her relationship with Amazon is at an impasse.
Broccoli is reportedly willing to cast a nonwhite Bond but won’t budge on having the beloved character be British and a man.
