Chuck Schumer spent months screaming that ICE was "rogue" and "out of control" and demanded the federal government put watchdogs on every immigration agent in America.
Then he shut down the watchdogs.
That's not a punchline – that's exactly what happened, and the DHS inspector general confirmed it in writing on Wednesday.
The DHS Shutdown Just Killed Democrats' Own ICE Investigation
Seven separate internal probes into ICE conduct are now suspended.
Gone is the audit determining whether ICE investigates its own agents for excessive force.
Gone is the program conducting unannounced inspections of ICE detention facilities.
Gone is the investigation into whether Customs and Border Protection is operating within federal law – the very probe Democrats demanded after CBP agents shot U.S. citizen Alex Pretti in Minneapolis last month.
All of it paused because Schumer and Hakeem Jeffries walked away from a bipartisan deal that had already passed the House.
The DHS inspector general's office confirmed that 85 percent of its audits, evaluations, and inspections are now on ice – and 60 percent of the oversight workforce has been furloughed.
ICE Keeps Running. TSA Workers Don't Get Paid.
Democrats' whole gambit was to use the shutdown to kneecap ICE.
It didn't work.
ICE is fully funded through Trump's One Big Beautiful Bill Act, which put $75 billion into the agency and $65 billion into Customs and Border Protection.
Deportations continue. Interior enforcement continues. Border czar Tom Homan confirmed it publicly – the mission goes on.
What isn't continuing? The paychecks of 60,000 TSA workers guarding airports across America right now.
What isn't continuing? FEMA's ability to process disaster relief payments to states still recovering from brutal winter storms.
What isn't continuing? The Secret Service's improvement plan – the one demanded after someone nearly assassinated President Trump in 2024.
House Appropriations Chairman Tom Cole said it plainly: "ICE is fully funded. The Border Patrol is fully funded. What they're doing is hurting TSA agents, keeping men and women from the Coast Guard from getting paid, making sure we can't fully fund FEMA."
Democrats Triggered a Government Shutdown Before. It Backfired Then Too.
This isn't even Democrats' first shutdown rodeo this year.
In October 2025, Senate Democrats blocked a funding resolution and triggered the longest government shutdown in American history – 43 days – before finally caving and getting almost nothing for it.
TSA workers went without paychecks then too.
FEMA disaster workers went without paychecks then too.
The bipartisan DHS funding bill that already passed the House this time included body cameras for ICE agents, new training requirements, and increased funding for the inspector general's office to do the exact oversight Democrats claim to want.
Jeffries and Schumer killed it anyway.
And here's the part that should make your blood boil.
On the Senate floor in September 2023, Schumer himself warned that a shutdown would throw TSA "into chaos" and threaten FEMA's disaster fund.
Three years later, he pulled the trigger on exactly that scenario – twice.
What This Is Really About
What Democrats wanted was chaos – and the ability to run campaign ads blaming Trump for a department they deliberately defunded.
The problem is the math doesn't work.
ICE keeps running. The border stays secure. The only person actually getting hurt is the TSA agent at your airport, working this week without a paycheck, still recovering financially from the last time Schumer did this.
He knew that when he made the call.
He did it anyway.
