Iran bragged about shutting down 20% of the world's oil supply two weeks ago.
Now 32 nations are releasing emergency oil reserves at a scale the world has never seen before.
Trump didn't just respond – he turned Schumer's talking point into the largest coordinated emergency oil release in the 50-year history of the International Energy Agency.
Iran Threatened $200 Oil While Gas Prices Surged to a Two-Year High
The mullahs thought they had Trump cornered.
After Operation Epic Fury killed Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei on February 28, Iran's military shut the Strait of Hormuz – the narrow chokepoint carrying one-fifth of the world's daily oil supply.
Oil shot from $70 a barrel to nearly $120 in days.
Iran's military spokesperson then issued an explicit threat: get ready for $200-a-barrel oil.
Gas prices surged nearly 60 cents a gallon nationwide in a single week – the highest level of either of Trump's terms in office.
Chuck Schumer went straight to his cameras and demanded Trump release oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve "IMMEDIATELY."
Trump released 172 million barrels – and rallied 31 other nations to release 400 million more.
Trump's Strategic Petroleum Reserve Release Just Broke Every Record Biden Set
Schumer's Sunday press release practically wrote itself.
He accused Trump of a "reckless war of choice" and demanded the president tap the reserve to give Americans "relief at the pump."
Trump tapped the reserve – at a scale that left Biden's 2022 effort in the dust.
Biden released 180 million barrels over six months during the Ukraine crisis, acting alone.
Trump authorized 172 million barrels starting next week as the U.S. contribution to a coordinated 400-million-barrel global release – the largest in IEA history, dwarfing every prior emergency action including the Gulf War, Hurricane Katrina, and the Libyan civil war combined.
Energy Secretary Chris Wright put it plainly: "For 47 years, Iran and its terrorist proxies have been intent on killing Americans. They have manipulated and threatened the energy security of America and its allies. Under President Trump, those days are coming to an end."
The SPR will be replenished with 200 million barrels over the next year – 20% more than drawn down, at no cost to taxpayers.
Schumer went quiet.
Short-Term Pain for the Permanent End of Iranian Energy Terror
The political play from Democrats is obvious.
Gas prices are up – blame Trump, own the midterm message, make it about affordability.
Sen. Mark Kelly introduced a bill to suspend the federal gas tax.
Democratic strategists are openly celebrating what one called "attributional clarity" at the pump.
Here is what they are not saying.
Iran has terrorized the Strait of Hormuz for decades.
In 1987, Iran mined those same waters and blew a hole in the USS Samuel B. Roberts.
Ronald Reagan retaliated – but Iran's ability to hold the world's oil supply hostage remained intact.
Every president since has tolerated Iran's stranglehold on global energy.
Trump is the first to put a permanent end to it.
The Strait of Hormuz carries 20 million barrels of oil per day.
Iran has used that leverage to fund terrorism, build nuclear capabilities, and threaten American lives for nearly half a century.
The cost of ending that threat is weeks of elevated gas prices.
The cost of not ending it is another generation of Iranian energy extortion – plus a nuclear Iran.
Schumer knows this.
He is choosing the political attack over the strategic reality, and American voters should notice.
Trump called the gas price surge "a little glitch" and promised prices would drop rapidly once the Iran mission concludes.
The historic SPR release proves he was already moving to address the short-term pain – while the long-term mission continues.
