For decades, San Francisco let the Tenderloin rot into America's most dangerous open-air drug market.
Last week, city officials finally admitted they found nine convenience stores operating as full-scale gambling and drug dens – complete with slot machines, meth operations, weapons arsenals, and stolen goods fencing.
Democrats watched this neighborhood turn into a criminal enterprise for over 100 years and did nothing.
Police Raids Uncover Illegal Gambling Operations And Drug Activity
City Attorney David Chiu announced nine stores shut down or sued over the past 18 months in the Tenderloin.
Officers seized up to 11 gambling machines from a single location, along with money-counting machines and tens of thousands in cash.
At US Smoke Shop, police found $17,269 in cash, five gambling machines, and two pistol magazines.
They discovered methamphetamine hidden beneath display shelves at Family Corner Discounts – 50.8 grams sitting there like inventory.
Police seized hundreds of glass pipes and Brillo pads used to smoke meth and crack, cannabis, vape cartridges, and enough drug paraphernalia to stock a head shop.
Weaponry included loaded firearms with magazines, high-capacity Glock magazines, and ammunition.
These weren't convenience stores.
They were criminal enterprises operating in plain sight while city officials looked the other way.
San Francisco Convenience Stores Operated Fencing Operations For Stolen Goods
The stores functioned as fencing operations for organized retail theft rings.
Police seized merchandise still bearing original price tags from Walgreens, Sephora, CVS, Target, Trader Joe's, Harbor Freight, and Safeway.
They found out-of-state cigarettes and 17 stolen iPhones displayed for sale.
At SF Discount Market, an undercover officer walked in with two Gucci perfume boxes presented as stolen goods.
The clerk bought them on the spot.
In another case, someone tried to sell a hookah bar owner his own pipes – stolen from his lounge and brought to SF Discount Market because everyone knew that's where you fence stolen property.
This is what happens when Democrats effectively decriminalize shoplifting.
California's Proposition 47 reduced theft under $950 to a misdemeanor in 2014.
Then San Francisco's former DA Chesa Boudin – the radical socialist voters finally recalled – stopped prosecuting these crimes entirely.
Police quit making arrests because prosecutors wouldn't charge anyone.
Retailers stopped calling police because nothing would happen.
The Tenderloin became a free-for-all where organized crime networks ran the entire neighborhood.
Tenderloin Crime History Shows Democrats Created 100-Year Containment Zone
The Tenderloin got its name from corrupt cops in the 1800s shaking down restaurants for their best cuts of beef instead of cash bribes.
San Francisco built it as a containment zone for vice more than a century ago.
Single-room occupancy buildings packed people into rooms with no kitchens or living rooms – just enough space to sleep before heading back out to feed the neighborhood's bars, brothels, and gambling dens.
City officials deliberately designed it that way.
They wanted vice contained in one area instead of spread throughout San Francisco.
That strategy might have made sense in 1906.
But Democrats kept it going for over 100 years.
The neighborhood has 3,000 children living there – the highest concentration of kids in San Francisco.
They're growing up surrounded by open-air drug markets, tent encampments, and these criminal front operations.
Former Mayor London Breed declared a State of Emergency in the Tenderloin because of drugs.
She passed a Nighttime Safety Ordinance in 2024 – basically a curfew on convenience stores from midnight to 5 a.m.
That's how they finally started catching these operations.
The stores were doing business during prohibited hours because that's when the drug and gambling action happened.
City Attorney Chiu now wants to expand these curfews to South of Market – another neighborhood Democrats let deteriorate.
San Francisco Drug Market Democrats Ignored For Decades
Back in 2003, City Attorney Dennis Herrera sued one establishment for becoming a criminal hotspot with crack cocaine, stolen goods, and gang activity.
Then nothing.
For 20 years, gambling and drug operations in the Tenderloin went relatively unchecked.
Democrats running San Francisco knew exactly what was happening.
Tom Wolf, a recovering addict, described what everyone could see: Democrats had surrendered the neighborhood to cartels and organized crime.
Supervisor Matt Dorsey – who replaced a socialist on the Board of Supervisors – hopes the crackdown will make the Tenderloin a less welcoming environment for drug dealers and criminals.
That's the goal.
Make it "less welcoming" to drug dealers and organized crime.
Not eliminate it, not prosecute it aggressively, not restore law and order – just make it "less welcoming."
Democrats spent 100 years building and maintaining a containment zone for crime, then acted surprised when it became exactly what they designed it to be.
