Voters are done playing the partisan game.
And a record number of Americans just ditched both parties and made this one choice that has politicians scrambling.
Gallup poll reveals voters fleeing Democrat and Republican labels
New polling from Gallup shows 45% of Americans refuse to identify as either Democrat or Republican.
That crushes every previous record going back decades.
The old high of 43% happened three times — in 2014, 2023, and 2024.
Now it's jumped two full points in a single year.
Democrats and Republicans each claim only 27% of Americans.
Both parties are scraping rock bottom in terms of Americans willing to wear their labels.
Republicans dominated for three years while Biden wrecked the economy and opened the southern border.
Trump rode that advantage straight into the White House in November 2024.
Then something interesting happened — within months of Trump taking office, those independent voters started shifting.
The pattern mirrors Trump's first term when opposition to the president drove independents toward Democrats.
By late 2025, Democrats held an eight-point edge among independents who were willing to pick a side.
Taking everyone together — party members plus independents who lean one way — 47% now side with Democrats compared to 42% backing Republicans.
Gen Z voters and millennials reject two-party system at record rates
The generational breakdown tells the real story about where American politics is headed.
More than half of Gen Z — 56% — reject both party labels entirely.
That's nine points higher than millennials were at the same age in 2012.
And it's 16 points higher than Gen X was back in 1992.
Each generation is walking away from parties faster than the one before it.
Only three in ten boomers and older Americans call themselves independents.
The two-party system is literally dying off with the older generation.
Gallup breaks down the 45% of independents into three groups — 20% lean Democrat, 15% lean Republican, and 10% won't pick either side no matter what.
That 10% who refuse to lean represents millions of voters who despise both parties equally.
Compare that to 2024 when 18% leaned Republican — a three-point collapse in just one year.
Democrat and Republican Party approval ratings hit historic lows
Democrats hit their lowest favorable rating ever measured by Gallup.
Only 34% of Americans view the Democrat Party favorably.
That's the worst number since Gallup started tracking in 1992.
Republicans aren't winning any popularity contests either at 40% favorable.
Americans are watching both parties lurch toward their extremes while voters want something completely different.
The Democrat Party has gone so far left that six in ten members now call themselves liberal.
On the Republican side, more than three-quarters identify as conservative.
Meanwhile, nearly half of independents — 47% — describe themselves as moderate.
Only three in ten Democrats are moderate.
Only two in ten Republicans are moderate.
The parties are sprinting away from the center while most voters are begging for common sense.
That creates an impossible trap — if either party moves toward the middle to win independents, they risk their hardcore base staying home or cutting off donations.
The real reason independents keep bouncing between parties
This isn't about voters switching from Democrat to Republican or vice versa.
Core party members stay loyal — over 90% stick with their party from election to election.
The chaos comes from independents who have weak attachments and flip based on which side angers them less.
Whoever controls the White House becomes the target.
Biden's disasters on inflation, crime, and the border cost Democrats their advantage heading into 2024.
Trump won on a Republican wave driven by independents fleeing Biden's failures.
Now Trump sits in the Oval Office and those same independents are already turning against Republicans.
The last six elections — three presidential and three midterm — have seen the party in power lose either the presidency or Congress every single time.
That's not normal political turnover.
That's voters punishing whoever holds the reins regardless of party.
The independent surge isn't temporary.
It represents Americans rejecting a system that forces them to pick between two choices they can't stand.
Young voters especially are walking away and they're not coming back.
Both parties better figure out how to appeal to voters who hate partisan games.
Because the fastest-growing political group in America is "none of the above."
