The royal family has been torn apart by one of the most devastating feuds in modern history.
Prince William and Prince Harry haven’t spoken in years, creating a rift that seems impossible to heal.
And Princess Diana’s biographer just revealed one truth about William and Harry that broke hearts everywhere.
The heartbreaking reality Diana would have changed
Andrew Morton spent countless hours with Princess Diana, recording the intimate details that would become her explosive tell-all biography.
Now, nearly three decades after her tragic death, Morton is sharing what the People’s Princess would think about her sons’ bitter estrangement.
The timing of his revelation couldn’t be more poignant.
Both William and Harry recently honored their mother’s legacy – but they did it on opposite sides of the world, with no communication between them.
William was in Sheffield, England, marking the second anniversary of his Homewards initiative to combat homelessness.
Meanwhile, Harry was walking through an Angolan minefield, following the same path Diana courageously took decades earlier.
"We all remember the days when Harry and William were joshing with one another, and it all seemed set for their relationship and the future — that Harry, as Diana always used to say, would be William’s wingman," Morton told PEOPLE magazine.¹
But here’s what would have left Diana absolutely heartbroken.
"It’s a great loss for the monarchy," Morton explained.²
Diana’s vision for her boys has been destroyed
Morton’s comments cut straight to the heart of what makes this royal rift so tragic.
Diana didn’t just see her sons as brothers – she had a specific vision for how they would support each other throughout their lives.
"Diana always used to say she had two boys for a reason — the younger would be there to support the older in the lonely task as future King," Morton revealed.³
That dream has been completely shattered.
Instead of Harry serving as William’s trusted wingman, the brothers now live on different continents with their children growing up as strangers.
The breakdown started years ago, but it reached a breaking point when Harry and Meghan made their shocking exit from royal duties.
"Things were said that sparked the initial rift, and it’s never healed," Morton noted.⁴
Royal historian Robert Lacey painted an even bleaker picture of the situation.
"The rift is very profound and very long-lasting," Lacey told PEOPLE. "It will not be changed, in my opinion, until Harry makes a move and apologizes."⁵
But Morton believes Diana would have prevented this disaster from ever happening.
"There is no doubt Diana would have tried to act as a peacemaker between them," he said. "If she had been around, they would have worked things out in a different way."⁶
The royal family Diana would no longer recognize
The contrast between Diana’s vision and today’s reality is staggering.
William, now 42, is focused on his role as future King while supporting his wife Kate through her cancer recovery.
Their three children – George, 12, Charlotte, 10, and Louis, 7 – are being raised in Windsor with traditional royal values.
Harry, 40, has built a completely different life in Montecito, California, with Meghan and their two children – Archie, 6, and Lilibet, 4.
The cousins have never been photographed together since Lilibet was born, creating a generational divide Diana never could have imagined.
Harry’s explosive memoir Spare detailed a 2019 confrontation where he claimed William physically attacked him over concerns about Meghan.
The fallout from Harry and Meghan’s Oprah interview, their Netflix series, and Harry’s book has created wounds that may never heal.
"Some members of my family will never forgive me," Harry admitted earlier this year.⁷
Sources say Harry’s attempts to reach out to William have been completely ignored.
Diana’s peacemaking spirit died with her
What makes Morton’s revelation so devastating is understanding how different things could have been.
Diana wasn’t just the boys’ mother – she was their mediator, their source of normalcy, and their connection to the real world.
She took them to homeless shelters and amusement parks alike, teaching them that being royal meant serving others.
Mick Clarke from London’s The Passage shelter remembers how those childhood visits shaped William’s character.
Clarke says William has spoken about how Diana "made it very pointed that he was exposed to life beyond palace walls."⁸
That shared foundation of service continues to drive both brothers, but now they pursue their mother’s legacy in isolation from each other.
Both princes honor Diana by giving their daughters her name as a middle name.

Royal experts agree that Diana’s death robbed the monarchy of its most effective peacemaker.
Historian Amanda Foreman noted that reconciliation seems impossible because "Everyone wants it to happen on their terms."⁹
The institutional pressures that divide William and Harry would have been no match for Diana’s maternal authority.
She understood better than anyone how to balance royal duty with human compassion.
Diana would have seen through the palace politics, the media manipulation, and the wounded pride that keeps her sons apart.
Instead, William has moved from anger to what sources describe as complete indifference about his brother’s situation.
Royal biographer Sally Bedell Smith believes William has accepted that "He can control what he does in his life, but he has no control over what Harry does."¹⁰
There are faint signs that Harry might eventually reconcile with his father, King Charles.
Reports suggest Harry’s representatives have been in contact with Charles’s communications team about a possible meeting.
