The radical Left thought they owned the culture war.
Teachers were being bullied into lying to kids every single day.
And one vote just made Virginia leftists melt down like you've never seen.
Teachers across America have been caught in the crosshairs of the transgender movement's war on reality and common sense.
School administrators weaponized pronoun policies to force educators into participating in something that violated their deepest beliefs.
Now one Virginia school board just drew a line in the sand that sent shock waves through the entire country.
Chesapeake School Board Takes Historic Stand Against Compelled Speech
The Chesapeake School Board voted 7-2 on December 15 to end the practice of forcing teachers and staff to use pronouns that contradict biological reality.¹
Board Chair Angela Swygert made it crystal clear why this policy change had to happen.
"A person who does not fundamentally agree with the use of alternative pronouns and titles cannot be compelled to use them," Swygert said at the meeting.²
Under the new rules, teachers and staff can't be forced to address colleagues or students using language that violates their constitutional rights.³
And teachers can no longer give students pronouns or titles that don't match their biological sex.⁴
Swygert explained this wasn't about discrimination.
"The use of alternative pronouns and titles is a controversial and complex issue that is best handled by families and does not belong in the classroom," Swygert said.⁵
The policy zeroes in on what employees can be compelled to say, not what they choose to say voluntarily among peers.
After nearly an hour of public comment from more than 20 speakers who mostly opposed the measure, the board voted to protect constitutional rights over activist demands.
The Parade of Expensive Lawsuits That Forced This Change
Chesapeake's decision didn't happen in a vacuum.
School districts across America have been hemorrhaging taxpayer money defending indefensible pronoun mandates that violate the First Amendment.
Virginia's own West Point School Board learned this lesson the expensive way in 2024.
The district paid former teacher Peter Vlaming $575,000 in damages and legal fees after firing him for refusing to use pronouns that contradicted a student's biological sex.⁶
Vlaming tried to accommodate everyone by using the student's preferred name and avoiding pronouns altogether.
That wasn't good enough for the radical administrators who demanded he actively participate in affirming something he knew wasn't true.
The Virginia Supreme Court sided with Vlaming, ruling that the state Constitution protects diversity of thought, speech, and religion for public employees.⁷
Ohio suffered the same fate when Jackson Local School District was forced to pay middle school teacher Vivian Geraghty $450,000 after pushing her to resign for refusing to use students' "preferred pronouns."⁸
A federal judge ruled that forcing teachers to use preferred names and pronouns amounts to unconstitutional "compelled speech."⁹
The court also found the school's "pronoun practice was not neutral" and violated the First Amendment.¹⁰
These weren't isolated incidents of teachers being unreasonable.
These were good educators who tried to find compromises that respected everyone while staying true to their own beliefs about reality and biology.
School administrators refused any middle ground and demanded total compliance with transgender ideology.
They got sued and lost badly, costing taxpayers more than a million dollars between just these two cases.
The Meltdown From Radical Activists Was Immediate and Predictable
The left-wing Virginia-Pilot newspaper went into full meltdown mode over Chesapeake's common sense policy.
Their editorial board declared the school board "effectively moved to ban transgender people from working as teachers and staff" and accused them of "proudly proclaiming its intolerance."¹¹
That's a complete lie and they know it.
The policy says nothing about who can work as a teacher.
It simply protects employees from being forced to say things that violate their constitutional rights or their understanding of basic biology.
"In succumbing to trans panic and promoting discrimination against a marginalized group, members of the School Board have made a decision that will reflect poorly on all that the city hopes to achieve," the editorial board whined.¹²
"They may be cheering themselves today, but this ignoble act puts them firmly on the wrong side of history," they added.¹³
Translation: How dare you protect teachers' constitutional rights instead of forcing them to participate in our ideology.
The newspaper accused the board of "intolerance" for refusing to compel speech.
That's rich coming from people who demand everyone affirm their beliefs or lose their livelihoods.
Several speakers at the December meeting claimed the policy would lead to "discrimination" and "potential lawsuits" from what they called "unconstitutional language."¹⁴
They've got it exactly backward.
The lawsuits and discrimination came from schools forcing teachers to violate their beliefs, not from protecting those beliefs.
This is what the Left does every single time they lose ground in the culture war.
They claim protecting constitutional rights is actually discrimination.
They say allowing people to speak according to their own beliefs is creating a "hostile environment."
They accuse anyone who won't bend the knee to transgender ideology of being hateful and intolerant.
Meanwhile, they're the ones who tried to bully, threaten, and fire teachers who simply wanted to use biologically accurate language.
The Chesapeake School Board stood up to this intimidation and protected teachers' First Amendment rights.
School boards across the country better pay attention because million-dollar lawsuits are piling up for districts that force unconstitutional pronoun policies on their employees.
