Tim Walz thought he could bury Minnesota's welfare fraud crisis.
A YouTuber with a camera proved him dead wrong.
And one viral video just caught Tim Walz red-handed in a scandal that could land him in prison.
Independent journalist exposes what Minnesota officials refused to investigate
YouTuber Nick Shirley released a 42-minute investigation that has exploded across social media with more than 80 million views.
The 23-year-old independent journalist did what Tim Walz and Minnesota state officials refused to do for years.
He showed up at daycare centers collecting millions in taxpayer dollars and discovered the ugly truth Democrats desperately wanted hidden.
Shirley visited the Quality Learning Center in Minneapolis during business hours on a weekday.
The facility can't even spell "learning" correctly on its sign — it reads "Quality Learing Center."
Licensed for 99 children and collecting roughly $1.9 million in Child Care Assistance Program funding in 2025 alone, the center appeared completely empty.¹
No children playing outside. No staff visible through the windows. No signs of operation whatsoever.
When Shirley approached the building, a woman inside immediately started screaming "Don't open up. It's ICE."²
Neighbors told Shirley they haven't seen children at the facility in over eight years.
Yet Minnesota kept sending taxpayer dollars — approximately $4 million total over recent years to this single location.
Ghost daycares collecting over $110 million in a single day
Shirley didn't stop with one center.
His crew visited multiple licensed daycare facilities across Minneapolis in one day.
Empty building after empty building. Locked doors. No children. No staff.
But millions of dollars in government payments flowing to these ghost operations.
"We uncovered over $110,000,000 in ONE day," Shirley posted on X. "It's time to hold these corrupt politicians and fraudsters accountable."³
The Quality Learning Center alone had racked up 95 violations from Minnesota agencies between 2019 and 2023.⁴
Violations for missing child records. Safety issues. Inadequate documentation.
Minnesota bureaucrats documented the problems but kept cutting checks anyway.
House Majority Whip Tom Emmer, who represents Minnesota's Third District, tore into Walz after watching Shirley's video.
"4 million dollars of hard-earned tax dollars going to an education center that can't even spell learning correctly," Emmer wrote on X. "Care to explain this one, @TimWalz?"⁵
The answer is simple: Walz can't explain it because his administration enabled it.
Walz ignored whistleblowers and protected the fraud for years
This daycare scam represents just one piece of Minnesota's massive welfare fraud crisis.
Federal prosecutors estimate over $1 billion stolen from Minnesota social service programs since 2018.⁶
First Assistant U.S. Attorney Joe Thompson announced in December 2025 that suspected fraud in Minnesota's Medicaid programs alone likely exceeds $9 billion.⁷
The schemes involved everything from pandemic child nutrition programs to housing assistance to autism therapy billing.
Seventy-eight of 86 defendants charged so far are members of Minnesota's Somali community.⁸
Federal counterterrorism sources confirm millions of stolen welfare dollars were funneled to Somalia, where the terror group Al-Shabaab took their cut.⁹
One former investigator put it bluntly: "The largest funder of Al-Shabaab is the Minnesota taxpayer."¹⁰
Walz knew about the fraud for years and did nothing.
Whistleblowers from the Minnesota Department of Human Services claim the governor engaged in "systematic retaliation" against employees who tried to expose the schemes.¹¹
State officials were "reluctant to act" because they feared "political backlash among the Somali community" and accusations of racism.¹²
Translation: Walz cared more about securing votes from fraudsters than protecting taxpayers.
House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer launched a congressional investigation after evidence emerged that Walz was caught on tape "pledging to help Feeding Our Future fraudsters" — defendants in a separate $250 million child nutrition scam.¹³
That conversation also included discussions of campaign donations from Somali community leaders.
Days later, Walz and his son accepted contributions from individuals in that meeting.
Walz's pathetic excuses fall apart under scrutiny
When NBC's Kristen Welker confronted Walz about the fraud scandal, he tried to take credit for prosecutions.
"I take responsibility for putting people in jail," Walz claimed.¹⁴
That's a brazen lie.
Every single prosecution came from federal investigators and U.S. Attorneys — not Minnesota state officials.
The Minnesota Star Tribune reported that state officials "provided little or no evidence to federal investigators, who had to build a case from scratch."¹⁵
Federal agents did the work. State bureaucrats under Walz's watch actively obstructed it.
When reporters pressed Walz about Somalis being held accountable, he pivoted to attacking white men.
"Look, it's not law-abiding citizens," Walz stammered before deflecting to claim white people commit crimes too.¹⁶
President Trump has had enough of Walz's excuses.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced the Treasury Department is investigating whether Minnesota welfare dollars ended up funding Al-Shabaab terrorists.¹⁷
Trump ended Temporary Protected Status for Somalis in Minnesota and ordered ICE raids to begin removing criminal aliens.
FBI Director Kash Patel announced the FBI is surging additional agents to Minnesota to investigate the fraud allegations exposed on social media.¹⁸
Elon Musk shared Shirley's video with one word: "Prosecute."¹⁹
Vice President JD Vance called out exactly what's happening: "Politicians like it because they get power. Welfare cheats like it because they get rich. But it's a zero sum game, and they're stealing both money and political power from Minnesotans."²⁰
Walz enabled the largest welfare fraud operation in American history.
He ignored whistleblowers, protected fraudsters, and let billions in taxpayer dollars vanish while some of that money funded terrorists who kill Americans.
Nick Shirley accomplished in one day what Tim Walz refused to do in years — expose the truth.
Now the federal government is moving in to do the job Walz deliberately left undone.
