Then he ran for president twice on the Democrat ticket.
New York City's socialist mayor just pulled the same move on national television – and in the same breath told you exactly where he's headed.
The Interview Nobody Wants to Talk About
Zohran Mamdani sat down with Kristen Welker on Meet the Press last Sunday and delivered one of the more revealing political performances of 2026.
Welker asked whether Mamdani wanted Kamala Harris to run for president again.
His answer: "I have to be honest, I haven't thought about the candidacies for president this time. My focus is 2026."
Welker didn't let it slide. "You're the only Democrat who hasn't thought about that," she said.
Mamdani's response: "And I'm proud to say that I am not, and will never be, running for president."
Strong words. Except he said something completely different on CBS just days earlier.

On CBS Mornings, Mamdani laid out his political expansion plan with zero ambiguity: "Before I was the Mayor, I was an Assemblymember of Astoria and Long Island City. At that time, I was told that you could only be a Democratic socialist in Northwest Queens. Then I became the Mayor. Now the next question is the state. Then it'll be – the next question will be the country."
Northwest Queens. Then mayor. Then state. Then country.
That's not a denial.
That's a roadmap.
The Government Grocery Store That Should Terrify You
Before we get to where he's taking this nationally, look at what he's already doing in New York City.
Mamdani just announced he's opening a city-run grocery store in East Harlem.
Nine thousand square feet. Thirty million dollars of taxpayer money. Run by the government.
Stocked with what the government decides are "essential" goods at prices the government sets.
He's not stopping there.

An additional $40 million to build one government grocery store in every remaining borough of New York City.
Think about what that is.
The government decides what food is available, at what price, in your neighborhood.
This is not a fringe policy from a fringe candidate.
This is the mayor of the largest city in America, and he's doing it right now.
When the Soviet Union collapsed, the images that defined it were the bread lines.
Empty shelves. Government-run food distribution that couldn't keep up with demand because no one in a government building has ever figured out how to run a grocery store.
Venezuela tried the same thing under Chávez. Within a decade, Venezuelans were hunting pigeons in the park for protein.
Mamdani knows this history. He just doesn't think it applies to him.
He also announced New York City's first-ever pied-à-terre tax – an annual fee on luxury properties worth more than $5 million owned by part-time residents.
He calls it $500 million in new revenue for free child care and cleaner streets.
Here's what he didn't mention: New York City is already losing residents at a steady clip.
Mamdani acknowledged it on camera. Then said he has no hesitation raising taxes anyway.
The people who can leave already are leaving.
The people who can't leave are getting government grocery stores.
Why This Should Scare Every Conservative in America
The Democratic Party has spent three years in a civil war between its establishment wing and its socialist wing.
Mamdani isn't fighting that war. He's skipping it entirely.

He won New York City's mayoralty not by debating policy papers but by turning out working-class voters in Queens and Brooklyn who hadn't shown up in years.
He flipped neighborhoods that had been reliably centrist for decades.
That's the template he's describing when he says democratic socialism "can flourish anywhere" because "there is only one majority in this country, that's the working class."
Hugo Chávez said the same thing in Venezuela in 1998.
He started at the local level too. His socialism was people-focused, he insisted – not ideological. He cared about the working class.
He was going to take on the elites.
You already know how that ended.
Conservatives who are dismissing Mamdani as a New York City problem are making the same mistake the Venezuelan center-right made in the late 1990s.
They assumed voters would eventually figure it out.
They didn't – not until it was far too late.
Mamdani said he'll never run for president.
His own roadmap ends at "the country."
One of those two statements is true.
