She reminded Frey that under Obama – his political hero – Hennepin County let ICE agents keep an office right inside the jail and talk to whoever they wanted.

ICE had a dedicated office staffed 24 hours a day in Hennepin County Jail.
Federal agents had full access to interview inmates about immigration status.
The county cooperated with ICE detainers after criminals served their time.
This wasn't some rogue operation – Rick Stanek, the Democratic sheriff who ran the jail from 2007 to 2019, confirmed ICE had complete access to everyone in custody.
Hunt asked Frey point blank: "Do you think it's good policy for the jails to follow an ICE detainer and hand someone over if they've committed a crime?"

"I mean, look, you're asking all the right questions here," Frey stammered.
Translation: I have no good answer for this.
He immediately claimed he doesn't have "full expertise" in how jail operations work because that's "not our jurisdiction."

Frey's been mayor since 2018, watching Trump pull 700 federal agents from his city, calling ICE operations an attack on democracy, rallying other mayors to resist – and now he suddenly doesn't know how the county jail works?

Democrat-run Hennepin County cooperated fully until 2017, when suddenly the ACLU pressured Sheriff Stanek to stop honoring detainers.

The policy didn't change – Democrats' political calculation did.

How Minneapolis Sanctuary City Policy Protects Criminal Aliens
Frey built Minneapolis's entire economy around illegal immigration.
Not legal immigration – illegal immigration specifically.
The city relies on a constant flow of foreign workers, consumers, and renters who exist in legal limbo, which creates a permanent underclass that Democrat politicians can exploit.
Enforcing immigration law would collapse that model.
That's why Hennepin County now ignores 92% of ICE detainers – they honored only 8% of 469 requests between 2022-2024.
That's why Victoria Eileen Harwell's killer, German Adriano Llangari Inga, was released twice after ICE placed detainers on him following a drunk driving crash that killed her in August 2024.
First after his arrest, then again after he was charged with criminal vehicular homicide.
He was charged May 2, arrested May 10 on the warrant, then released May 13 after posting $100,000 bond – despite ICE placing another detainer.
ICE had to hunt him down themselves days later.
Frey's "sanctuary" policy killed that woman as surely as if he'd been driving drunk himself.
Trump's Brilliant Move That Democrats Can't Counter
After two protesters got shot during Minneapolis ICE operations – one fatally – Trump announced he's pulling back agents from cities unless mayors specifically ask for help.
Democrats spent years claiming federal immigration enforcement makes their cities "less safe."
Trump just called their bluff.
You want ICE out? Fine.
But when the next Victoria Harwell gets killed by someone your jail released, that's on you.
Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry immediately asked Trump to send agents to help with "certain sections" of his state.
Frey? Radio silence on requesting help, but plenty of speeches about how Trump's creating chaos.
The president even revealed he had "great conversations" with Frey and Governor Tim Walz, then watched them "ranting and raving out there, literally as though a call wasn't made."
Trump's learning what everyone in Minnesota already knows – you can't trust Frey to tell the truth even about a phone call.
The Obama Standard Frey Won't Acknowledge
Here's the question Frey still hasn't answered: Was Obama wrong to let ICE operate freely in Minneapolis jails?
If yes – why didn't Democrats protest then?
If no – why is Trump wrong for wanting the same cooperation?
Frey can't answer because both responses destroy his narrative.
Admitting Obama was right means Trump's right now.
Admitting Obama was wrong means Democrats enabled "fascism" for eight years without complaint.
So instead, Frey dodges, deflects, and claims he doesn't understand jail operations despite being mayor during the biggest ICE confrontation in Minnesota history.
The Minnesota Department of Corrections says it honors all federal detainers and coordinates with ICE for custody transfers.
State prisons comply with 100% of ICE requests.
But Democrat-run county jails like Hennepin County? They released nearly 470 criminals with active ICE detainers since Trump took office, according to DHS.
Frey built his entire political identity on resisting Trump's "invasion" – while quietly maintaining the exact system Obama created, just refusing to cooperate with it.
What Every Sanctuary City Mayor Can't Admit About Trump vs Obama
CNN just did something rare – actual journalism that exposed Democrat hypocrisy on camera.
Hunt didn't editorialize, didn't make excuses, just stated the facts about Obama's policy and watched Frey squirm.
Every sanctuary city mayor faces the same problem now.
They can't claim Trump's methods are unprecedented or unconstitutional – because Obama used them first, with Democrat support.
They can't claim cooperation with ICE is impossible – because they did it willingly under Obama.
The only honest answer is they oppose Trump personally, not the policy.
