America spent fifty years telling kids that trades were a consolation prize.
Now those kids are wiring data centers and pulling $280,000 a year before their thirtieth birthday.
Mike Rowe just told Fox Business what he saw in Plano, Texas – and you need to hear this.
The Jobs No One Told Your Kids About
Rowe appeared on Varney & Co. this week with a warning that doubles as an opportunity.
The AI buildout is the largest infrastructure investment in American history.
And the men who wire the buildings are becoming the highest-paid workers in the room.
Tech giants are pouring nearly $700 billion into data center construction in 2026 alone.
Amazon is spending $200 billion this year.
The Stargate Project – OpenAI, SoftBank, and Oracle – committed $500 billion over four years just to build AI infrastructure on American soil.
Here is what that number means in the real world.
Electrical work accounts for 45 to 70 percent of total data center construction costs, according to the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers.

And right now, America is 80,000 of them short.
The National Electrical Contractors Association reports the union side is losing 20,000 electricians a year to retirement – with 80,000 positions sitting open.
Google's own policy team put it in writing: the electrician shortage "may constrain America's ability to build the infrastructure needed to support AI."
That's not a union talking.
That's the company that controls your search results admitting it cannot build the future without blue-collar workers.
The College Detour Is Getting Harder to Justify
The path your guidance counselor sold you on is falling apart.
More than half of 2023 college graduates were working jobs that didn't require a degree a year after graduating.
Unemployment among recent college graduates has hit 5.6 percent – the highest in over a decade outside the pandemic.
The median electrician salary now tops $71,000 – already 14 percent above the national median, and climbing.
Master electricians average $94,500.
In data center work, the ceiling disappears entirely.
Rowe met three electricians in Plano, Texas – all under 30, none carrying student loans, all earning between $240,000 and $280,000 per year – and companies were actively trying to poach them.
Rowe's foundation has been pushing this message since 2008, handing out work-ethic scholarships to Americans willing to bet on themselves in the trades.
This year, the mikeroweWORKS Foundation is distributing $2.5 million to trade school students – no GPA requirement, no diploma prerequisite, just a signed pledge that you believe in showing up and working hard.
Sanders Sees the Wave Coming. Rowe Wants America to Ride It.
Here is the part that surprised everyone watching.
Rowe told Varney he agrees with Bernie Sanders – not on policy, but on the scale of what's coming.
Both men see a labor revolution building.
Sanders sees disruption and wants the government to manage it.
Rowe sees the same disruption and wants Americans to train for it.
The Trump economy – built on domestic energy production, American manufacturing investment, and AI infrastructure poured into U.S. soil – is the reason those three kids in Plano exist.
The $500 billion Stargate commitment happened in January 2025 with Donald Trump standing next to the CEOs.
The energy buildout powering these data centers – natural gas, nuclear, domestic production – happened because an administration finally said yes to American output.
Rowe is right that the revolution is coming.
Electricians, steamfitters, pipefitters, welders, CNC operators – these are the workers who build the AI economy while the tech companies take the credit.
Your kid's guidance counselor has no idea what's coming.
