AOC stood on the Met Gala red carpet in a "Tax the Rich" dress and lectured America about billionaires – while accepting the dress as an illegal gift.
Meghan McCain watched the 2026 Gala and said what everyone already knew.
Now there's a federal ruling to back her up.
She Didn't Pay for the Dress She Lectured You With
The House Ethics Committee released its ruling in July 2025 – bipartisan, 10 members, four years in the making.
The verdict: AOC violated House gift rules at the 2021 Met Gala.
She paid below fair market value for the custom "Tax the Rich" gown, the shoes, the handbag, and the accessories.

The gown alone cost $6,279 to make.
Her staff had pushed the designer to "keep costs down" – and the committee found evidence that the designer lowered prices specifically because of pressure from AOC's team.
She also brought her then-partner Riley Roberts for free – a ticket that would have cost at least $30,000.
The committee ordered her to pay $2,733 to vendors and donate $250 to the Costume Institute.
AOC's defense was that she didn't know about the unpaid invoices.
"I just never, ever, ever would have allowed that to happen," she told investigators in 2023.
Her staff handled it.
Her staff's job was to handle it.
The dress was her idea.
What Meghan McCain Said Out Loud
Meghan McCain watched this year's 2026 Met Gala from the outside and unloaded on X.
"I think the Met ball is tone deaf given the times of extreme political populism we're living in," she wrote.
She called the concept "creepy" and the outfits "villains in the Hunger Games."
Then she went directly for AOC.
"AOC will always be a moron for having attended," McCain posted.

McCain had called the event obscene back in 2021 too – $35,000 per person, $200,000 per table – and said the celebrities should have donated that money to essential workers instead.
She was right then and she's right now.

AOC showed up in a dress with a political message, raised money off the outrage, blamed her staff when the ethics investigation started, and spent four years telling investigators she didn't know about the unpaid bills.
Donald Trump Jr. called her a fraud in 2021.
Republicans filed ethics complaints within weeks of her wearing the dress.
Democrats called it a smear campaign.
The bipartisan Ethics Committee just confirmed the Republicans were right.

AOC is not a socialist.
She is a celebrity who uses socialist language to raise money from people who actually believe it.

It was a brand activation at a $35,000-per-ticket party – paid for, in part, by gifts she wasn't supposed to accept.
Washington Examiner reporter Jerry Dunleavy captured it the night she wore the dress: AOC wanted the access, the party, and the photos – and put "Tax the Rich" on her back so nobody would notice.
Four years later, the Ethics Committee proved the dress – like the politics – was something she got for less than it was worth, courtesy of people who wanted access to her.
Meghan McCain called her a moron for attending.
She undersold it.
