McDonald’s has been struggling to get customers back through their doors.
The fast-food giant’s sales have been slipping for months as inflation-weary Americans tighten their belts.
But McDonald’s made one move that left customers stunned and scrambling to drive-thrus.
McDonald’s brings back the Snack Wrap after a nine-year hiatus
After nearly a decade of customer pleas, petitions, and persistent demands, McDonald’s finally caved and brought back one of its most beloved menu items.
The Snack Wrap officially returned to McDonald’s menus nationwide on July 10, and fans couldn’t contain their excitement.
"Happy snack wrap day to all that celebrate," one thrilled customer posted on social media.¹
The tortilla-wrapped chicken creation had been missing from McDonald’s menus since 2016, when the chain axed it because it was supposedly too complicated for kitchen staff to prepare quickly.
But customers never forgot – and they never stopped asking for it back.
McDonald’s USA President Joe Erlinger admitted the company had been flooded with requests. "It has a cult following," Erlinger told Good Morning America back in December. "I get so many emails into my inbox about this product."²
One particularly desperate fan even started a Change.org petition that garnered nearly 19,000 signatures demanding the Snack Wrap’s return.³
Another customer, a pregnant woman named Carli, wrote to McDonald’s: "My biggest craving is something I can’t have. I am due July 14th, 2025. Will snack wraps be back before then? Please just give me a hint."⁴
The timing wasn’t coincidental. McDonald’s has been hemorrhaging customers as inflation continues to pummel American families under the Biden administration’s economic policies.
McDonald’s desperate sales slump forced their hand
The Golden Arches are facing their worst sales decline since the COVID-19 pandemic lockdowns.
Same-store sales at McDonald’s outlets in the U.S. plummeted 3.6% in the first quarter – a devastating blow that sent corporate executives scrambling for solutions.⁵
Traffic among low-income customers was down "nearly double digits," CEO Chris Kempczinski revealed on the company’s May earnings call.⁶
When your core customer base can’t afford to eat at your restaurants anymore, you know the economy is in serious trouble.
McDonald’s had to do something dramatic to win back customers who have been priced out by years of inflation and skyrocketing food costs.
Bringing back the Snack Wrap was a calculated move to tap into nostalgia and offer something at a more affordable price point.
The revived Snack Wrap is priced at $2.99 and will remain on menus permanently.⁷
It features McDonald’s new McCrispy Strips – a simplified version that’s easier for kitchen staff to prepare than the original recipe.
McDonald’s social media team even acknowledged the fan campaign that made the comeback possible. "You created a movement," the company posted on X. "A movement so powerful that you finally won."⁸
Customer reactions prove McDonald’s made the right call
The response has been overwhelmingly positive, with customers expressing genuine excitement about the return of their favorite menu item.
"This country is finally healing," one customer wrote on social media. "The #snackwrap is back and tastes just like I remembered."⁹
"The McDonald’s snack wrap is everything I’ve ever dreamed of," another satisfied customer posted.¹⁰
Even McDonald’s corporate executives seemed to understand the significance of the moment.
CEO Chris Kempczinski teased the return with a simple Instagram video message: "It’s back."¹¹
The company also made a humorous post about the launch, jokingly saying "Heard HR say if ur late to work tomorrow bc u got the first snack wrap at 10:31am ur good."¹²
Of course, not every customer was completely satisfied. Some complained about the simplified recipe and the absence of certain sauces like honey mustard that were available with the original version.
But the overwhelming response has been positive, with customers celebrating the return of what many considered the perfect on-the-go meal.
What this means for McDonald’s future
The Snack Wrap’s return represents more than just bringing back a popular menu item – it’s a signal that McDonald’s is finally listening to its customers.
For years, the company had brushed off requests to bring back the Snack Wrap, claiming it was too complicated and slowed down service.
But when your sales are tanking and customers are fleeing to competitors, you don’t have the luxury of being stubborn.
McDonald’s has also been making other strategic moves to compete in the increasingly competitive fast-food landscape.
The company rolled out a new Spicy Egg McMuffin breakfast sandwich and plans to add a "Daily Double" cheeseburger to its value menu.¹³
According to industry analysts, chicken outsells beef by nearly two-to-one in the fast-food space and continues expanding at a faster pace worldwide.¹⁴
The Snack Wrap’s return could even spark the next phase of the "chicken wars" that have been raging among fast-food chains.
Popeyes conveniently introduced its own chicken wraps just one day before McDonald’s announcement, while Burger King and Wendy’s have been selling their own versions since 2023.¹⁵
The bottom line is clear: McDonald’s had to swallow its pride and give customers what they wanted.
In an economy where every dollar counts, the company couldn’t afford to ignore the passionate demands of its most loyal fans.
The Snack Wrap’s triumphant return proves that sometimes, the customer really is right – and when a major corporation finally admits that, good things can happen.
