That unity didn't last long.

Daily Wire host Matt Walsh dropped a bombshell during a recent interview with Tucker Carlson about the state of the conservative movement after Charlie Kirk's assassination.
Walsh cut through the wishful thinking that dominated conservative media in the days after Kirk's death.
The truth about what happens when you kill a movement's leader left jaws on the floor.
Walsh told Carlson that conservatives kept repeating the same talking point after Tyler Robinson murdered Kirk while he spoke at Utah Valley University in September.
"A lot of the stuff we said right after he was killed turned out not to be true," Walsh explained. "Stuff that even I said, like, 'You killed one Charlie, but you made a million more Charlies.'"
Conservatives wanted to believe Kirk's assassination would inspire a new generation of leaders to rise up and fill the void.
Walsh admitted the movement said those words because "we wanted that to be true."
For a brief moment after Kirk's death on September 10, it felt like the conservative movement achieved the unity everyone hoped for.
"Everybody seemed unified," Walsh recalled. "People were coming together, and went to the memorial, everyone was there. It felt like a revival — almost a religious revival."
But that feeling didn't survive contact with reality.
"We didn't go from one Charlie to a million Charlies," Walsh stated. "We went from one Charlie to zero Charlies. That's what happens when you kill someone in this life."
Walsh delivered the harsh truth about political assassinations that no one wanted to hear.
"That's why assassinations happen — that's why people do them, because they work," Walsh explained.
The 22-year-old gunman who shot Kirk from 142 yards away succeeded in destroying what Kirk spent years building.
The leadership vacuum tearing the movement apart
Walsh said Kirk's death revealed something conservatives didn't fully understand until he was gone.
"This guy — who we didn't fully realize was the glue holding everything together — was holding this whole crazy coalition together," Walsh told Carlson. "It turns out it was one guy who was doing this, and his organization."
Turning Point USA continues operating after Kirk's death, and Walsh praised the organization's efforts to carry on.
"TPUSA is still around, and I respect them greatly," Walsh said. "They're doing the best they can."
But Kirk served as more than just the leader of one organization.
"He was the leader of the organization," Walsh stated. "He was a leader of the conservative movement. He was the glue. And now he's gone."
The infighting that erupted at Turning Point USA's recent AmericaFest conference in Phoenix proved Walsh's point.
Ben Shapiro called Tucker Carlson, Candace Owens, Megyn Kelly, and Steve Bannon "frauds and grifters" from the stage.
Bannon fired back, calling Shapiro "a cancer" on the conservative movement.
"It feels like everything is coming undone," Walsh lamented.
The conservative commentator found himself caught in the middle of the civil war consuming the movement.
"I consider myself a personal friend of many people on either side of these various disputes," Walsh explained.
That put Walsh in an impossible position as allies demanded he pick sides.
"What ends up happening is people on all sides shout at me that I need to denounce someone," Walsh said. "I need to disavow them."
The pressure went beyond simple disagreements about policy.
"Not just that I disagree, we've had disagreements, but the pressure is beyond that," Walsh continued. "Not just denounce, disavow, but condemn."
Walsh refuses to abandon friends under pressure
Walsh made clear he won't cave to mob pressure to turn on his friends.
"My answer has been no, I'm not going to do that," Walsh declared. "I'm not going to denounce a friend. Ever."
The Daily Wire host explained why loyalty matters more than public pressure campaigns.
"Because loyalty is a principle," Walsh stated. "Loyalty is one of the most important principles for any person — especially for men."
Walsh told Carlson that outsiders don't understand the personal relationships behind the scenes.
"If you're on the outside, you don't know what goes on behind the scenes," Walsh explained. "When I say someone is a friend, and I feel personal loyalty to them. It doesn't mean I just kinda like them, that means I know them personally."
Real friendship creates obligations that transcend political disagreements.
"Once someone does that for me, I feel duty-bound not to turn around and stab them in the back," Walsh said. "You have my back, I have yours."
Walsh accused people demanding denunciations of having no real principles.
"If you denounce someone — especially a friend — because a million people are screaming at you tell you to, that's not a principled stand," Walsh argued. "You're doing it to make the yelling stop."
Vice President JD Vance tried to cool tensions during his AmericaFest speech, telling attendees "we have far more important work to do than canceling each other."
But the damage Kirk's assassination caused to conservative unity became impossible to ignore.
Walsh's brutal honesty about assassinations working throughout human history hit conservatives harder than any of them wanted to admit.
