Charlie Kirk held the conservative movement together through sheer force of personality and political genius.
Now his death is tearing MAGA apart in ways nobody saw coming.
And Mark Halperin just dealt JD Vance a blow that has Trump World scrambling.
The Myth That Charlie Kirk's Death Created Unity
After Kirk's assassination on September 10th at Utah Valley University, the narrative seemed simple. The conservative movement had lost its brightest young star, and his death would galvanize an entire generation of right-wing activists to carry on his mission. Vice President JD Vance delivered a moving eulogy calling Kirk "irreplaceable" while promising that "at least a team of people" would try stepping into the gap.¹
Trump administration officials lined up to praise Kirk's legacy. White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles credited Turning Point USA with "an immeasurable help" to Trump's 2024 victory.² RFK Jr. called Kirk "a spiritual soulmate."³ Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt promised to honor his faith by praying before briefings just like Kirk did.⁴
The memorial service in Arizona drew tens of thousands. Everyone assumed MAGA would emerge stronger and more unified than ever. They were dead wrong.
Charlie Kirk Was The Indispensable Man Nobody Recognized
Political analyst Mark Halperin dropped a bombshell during an appearance on RealClearPolitics that should have every Trump loyalist paying attention. The assessment cuts straight to the bone about what the conservative movement just lost — and what's coming next.
"I've said before, and it's not my point, I stole it from somebody else, we've already seen that Charlie was an indispensable force by keeping the feuding at a minimum," Halperin explained.⁵
Kirk wasn't just a podcaster or campus activist. He was the glue holding together warring MAGA factions that spent the last decade barely tolerating each other. America First isolationists versus traditional interventionists. Populist insurgents versus donor-class Republicans. Young grassroots activists versus established conservative institutions.
"It's clear now that that was his, almost, I'd say it's linearly clear, but it seems obvious now that all these fights that have broken out are broken out because he's not there to keep the peace," Halperin continued.⁵
The evidence is everywhere. Tucker Carlson and Ben Shapiro are publicly feuding over Israel policy and accusations of antisemitism. Ted Cruz is attacking Carlson for interviewing white nationalist Nick Fuentes. Conservative donors are taking sides. Even Trump seems frustrated by the infighting, defending Carlson while Cruz positions himself as the "responsible" alternative.
Kirk somehow kept these people from each other's throats. Now nobody's left who can pull off that miracle.
Vance No Longer A Lock For 2028 Nomination
Halperin delivered the news that should terrify Vance's inner circle. The Vice President's path to the 2028 nomination — which seemed like a foregone conclusion just months ago — suddenly looks shakier than anyone wants to admit.
"I have backed way off my belief that the vice president's a lock for the nomination and that the president will endorse him," Halperin admitted. "I still think if the president endorses him, he is a lock, and I still think that's the most likely outcome."⁵
Read that carefully. Halperin went from "Vance is inevitable" to "Vance might get the nomination if Trump backs him, and that's not even guaranteed anymore."
The reasons for this shift are piling up fast. Prominent Republican donors are openly saying "we don't want a coronation" and demanding competitive primaries.⁵ Some are questioning Vance's political instincts after controversial moves in recent months. And most importantly, serious candidates like Ted Cruz aren't waiting around to see who Trump endorses.
"Then finally, Ted Cruz and others potentially making it clear that they're going to run," Halperin noted. "They're not waiting to see who Trump endorses. All that makes me think maybe this is up for grabs."⁵
Cruz has been laying groundwork for months — hosting donor retreats, building small-dollar fundraising networks through his podcast, criticizing Trump's tariff policies, and attacking Tucker Carlson to win over pro-Israel donors.⁶ He's courting exactly the establishment Republicans and traditional conservatives who never fully bought into Trump's populist revolution.
Early polls show Vance crushing the field with 42% support in one survey versus Cruz's measly 4%.⁷ But those numbers mean nothing if Trump decides to stay neutral or if the conservative movement fractures so badly that nobody can unite it.
Turning Point's Future In Serious Doubt
Halperin raised another uncomfortable question that Trump World desperately wants to ignore. Can Turning Point USA survive without Charlie Kirk?
"I don't, I mean no disrespect to the other people at Turning Point, including Erica Kirk, I don't know that they can keep the organization being the extraordinary turnout operation it was without Charlie," Halperin said.⁵
Kirk's widow Erika took over as CEO and has vowed to support Vance in 2028, revealing that supporting "JD for '28" was one of her last conversations with her husband.⁸ She's tried continuing Kirk's campus tour and promised Turning Point will focus on the 2026 midterms before jumping into presidential politics.
But nobody can replace what Kirk brought to the table. His charisma, his ability to debate hostile college students and make conservatives look good doing it, his talent for viral content that reached billions, his skill at keeping peace between feuding factions — those were unique gifts.
"They really were successful, but it just, it'd be like saying, you know, it's a crude metaphor, but you know, could Tesla continue to grow without Musk?" Halperin asked.⁵
The answer's pretty obvious. Tesla without Musk becomes just another car company fighting for market share. Turning Point without Kirk risks becoming just another conservative nonprofit begging for donations.
Even more concerning for Vance, if Turning Point can't maintain its get-out-the-vote machine, his 2028 campaign just lost its most powerful grassroots weapon. Kirk mobilized young voters in ways no other conservative figure could match. Those Gen Z Trump supporters don't automatically transfer their loyalty to anyone else.
Halperin's Warning About AI And The 2028 Ground Game
Halperin dropped one more prediction that should keep both parties up at night. The 2028 election will be dominated by whichever side masters artificial intelligence for voter turnout.
"I was a little bit ahead in thinking AI would be a big deal in 2024. It wasn't. It's clear now it's going to be a massive deal in 2026 and 2028, including for get out the vote," Halperin explained.⁵
Democrats have been playing catch-up on technology throughout the Trump era, but they're not hopelessly behind. Whichever party — or whichever organization like Turning Point — figures out how to harness AI for voter contact, persuasion, and turnout will have an enormous advantage.
"And Turning Point could play a role there. They could potentially. But that's going to require a lot of money and a lot of expertise," Halperin noted.⁵
Money and expertise that might be harder to come by if donors are questioning whether Turning Point can operate at Kirk's level. Money and expertise that Ted Cruz is actively working to divert toward his own presidential ambitions.
The conservative movement is facing something it hasn't dealt with in a decade — real uncertainty about who leads it after Trump. Kirk could have answered that question and united everyone behind Vance. Instead, his assassination opened a vacuum that ambitious politicians are racing to fill.
Vance remains the frontrunner. Trump will probably endorse him. But "probably" isn't "definitely" anymore. And in politics, "probably" gets you beaten by someone hungrier, better organized, and more ruthless.
