One group of Marines figured that out and decided to do something about it.
And Marine Toys for Tots just delivered one heartwarming surprise that left foster kids completely stunned.
Christmas in July brings hope when kids need it most
Look, most folks think Christmas happens in December and that’s that.
Marine Toys for Tots? They threw that rulebook out the window.
The country’s top children’s Christmas charity figured out something the rest of us missed – kids need hope all year long, not just when the calendar says it’s time.
Foster children in Smithfield, Virginia got the shock of their lives when they experienced Christmas in July at the second annual "Kids Summer Funfest" at Windsor Castle Park.¹
This wasn’t some rinky-dink summer event.
Pony rides, water slides, activities with local police and fire departments, and Gunny Bear – the beloved mascot who brought hugs and heartwarming moments to every single child there.
"At Marine Toys for Tots, we believe every child deserves to experience the magic of childhood," said LtGen Jim Laster, President & CEO of the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation.²

Ninety-four volunteers, first responders, and civic groups showed up with one mission – make sure these foster kids knew they mattered.

Volunteers get a reality check about what really matters
One volunteer couldn’t keep it together after seeing what this event did for these kids.
"Seeing the pure joy on the kids’ faces as they played, laughed, and hugged Gunny Bear made every minute of volunteering worth it," the volunteer shared.³
"We created a day where these children could just be kids – and that’s priceless," they added.⁴
Foster kids don’t get the same shot at childhood that other kids do.
They get bounced around from home to home like ping-pong balls.
No stability. No permanent family. Heck, they don’t even know where they’ll be sleeping next week half the time.
Events like the Kids Summer Funfest? That’s their chance to feel normal.
That’s their chance to experience the joy that every child deserves, no matter what kind of hand life dealt them.
A foster parent at the event was blown away by what they witnessed.
"This event gave my child a chance to shine. To feel special. To know they’re part of a larger community that truly cares. We’re so grateful," the foster parent said.⁵
