America has defended Europe for 77 years and asked for almost nothing in return.
Now Europe is blocking American planes, closing its airspace, and refusing to lift a finger while U.S. forces fight Iran.
So Marco Rubio walked into Fox News and asked the question out loud: why are we in NATO?
Trump Called It: NATO Was Never Going to Be There When It Mattered
Rubio used to be the Senate's most passionate NATO defender.
He co-authored legislation in 2023 specifically to prevent any president from pulling out of the alliance without Senate approval.
He believed in it.
Then Spain shut its airspace to U.S. bombers mid-operation.
Then France blocked Israeli aircraft carrying American munitions.
Then Italy denied landing rights at Sigonella – a base the U.S. has operated for decades.
Then Macron held a press conference and told reporters the Iran war was "not our operation."
Rubio went on Hannity and laid it out cold: "If now we have reached the point that we can't use those bases to defend America's interests, then NATO is a one-way street. Then NATO is simply about us having troops in Europe to defend Europe."
He wasn't done.
"When we need them to allow us to use their military bases, their answer is no? Then why are we in NATO?"

Spain Closed Its Airspace and France Blocked US Planes Over Their Own Energy Crisis
Here's the part that should make your blood boil.
The U.S. was not asking Europe to fire a single shot.
Not one soldier. Not one warship. Just: let our planes land. Let our bombers through your airspace.
Spain said no. France said no. Italy said no.
These are countries America has defended for three-quarters of a century – countries that owe their current borders and their current freedom to American blood and American money.
When Operation Epic Fury launched on February 28, the Strait of Hormuz closed almost immediately as Iran retaliated.
European economies are bleeding because of it.
Trump told them to go "just TAKE it" back if they were so concerned.
They didn't.

Instead, Macron announced he was working toward a "more European NATO" and called the operation one the Americans and Israelis "decided on by themselves."
Hegseth Refused to Confirm NATO Article 5 and Nobody in Washington Will Say Why
The moment nobody is talking about came at the Pentagon briefing on March 31.
A reporter asked Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth a simple question: is the United States still committed to NATO's Article 5 collective defense?
Hegseth declined to answer.
He said that was "a decision that will be left to the president."
Article 5 – the core promise that an attack on one ally is an attack on all – has been the bedrock of Western security since 1949.
Every defense secretary in history has reaffirmed it without hesitation.
Hegseth just put it on the table.
That is not a mistake. That is a message.
Europe Made a Strategic Blunder They Cannot Walk Back
Finland's president told Trump a "more European NATO" is taking shape – as if that helps America.
Meanwhile, the Strait of Hormuz is closed, global oil prices are spiking, and Europe's own energy supply is the one getting strangled.
Trump has said since 2016 that NATO allies were freeloaders who would abandon America when it mattered.
France, Spain, and Italy just proved him right during a shooting war, while American pilots were running missions overhead.
Rubio said it directly in the State Department transcript: he once saw "great value" in NATO because European bases let America "project power into different parts of the world" when national security demanded it.
That's the deal – American protection of Europe in exchange for American access to European soil.
Europe just voided their side of the contract.
Trump and Rubio meet NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte at the White House today.
Rutte once called Trump the "daddy" of the alliance.
Daddy's done.
