Retired Notre Dame head coach Lou Holtz is one the all-time greats in college football.
He weighed in with his reaction to the results of the 2024 Election.
And Lou Holtz had one message for Donald Trump that Democrats are going to hate.
Lou Holtz congratulates Donald Trump on a big victory
College Football Hall of Fame coach Lou Holtz was no stranger to big victories during his 34-year career in college and professional football.
He led the Notre Dame Fighting Irish to the school’s last National Championship for the 1988 season.
Holtz is a friend and a supporter of President-elect Donald Trump.
The former coach congratulated Trump on his victory in the Presidential election in a video posted to social media.
“President Trump, this is Lou Holtz. I just want to congratulate you on an unbelievable success,” Holtz said. “You had so many obstacles, you had so many reasons to lay down and stay down – all the unfair things that happened to you.”
Like a true football coach, Holtz credited Trump for persevering through the unprecedented obstacles he faced in this election.
Holtz told Trump that he is a “true winner” who overcame adversity to win the election.
“You didn’t moan. You didn’t complain,” Holtz continued. “You didn’t say ‘woe is me.’ You just went about and continued to do what you felt was in the best interests of this country, and now you’ve been rewarded. I can’t think of a better person to emulate their life after than how you’ve handled this crisis.”
Coach Holtz says Trump’s family tells a great deal about him
Holtz pointed to Trump’s family as a sign of his success.
“Your family is unbelievable,” Holtz said. “I look at how good a person is by his children. Your children are beautiful. Your wife is unbelievably beautiful.”
He added that the country was ready and able to help him succeed.
“But more importantly than anything else, you care. You care about other people, and I believe you will do a fantastic job at leading this country out of the problems we have,” Holtz explained. “Nobody can do it better than you, and just remember this: There are millions of ‘em just like me that stand here ready to help you any way we possibly can.”
“God bless you. Congratulations. You deserve it. And the real winners are the people of this country,” Holtz concluded.
Holtz began his head coaching career with the William & Mary Tribe in 1969 and made stops at North Carolina State, Arkansas, Minnesota, Notre Dame, South Carolina, and one year with the NFL’s New York Jets in 1976.
Trump presented him with the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2020.
“And I will say this about Lou: Everybody loves him. Everybody respects him. He’s tough as hell, and yet they all respect Lou,” Trump said at the ceremony. “They just – it’s amazing. They love him, and they respect him. Sometimes it’s a combination that doesn’t come together, you know? They respect, but you are — you are something. ‘I never coached football; I coached life,’ he said. And it’s true. His players really always loved him.”
Holtz called Trump the greatest President of his lifetime during the ceremony.
“For a guy that graduated in the lower third of his high school class, I feel fortunate to be able to be here but also to be part of this great country and to be next to an individual that I respect as much as him,” Holtz said. “I’m recognized for what other people did. I never made a block or a tackle, but I did try to teach people to make good choices. That’s all I’ve ever tried to do.”
