The FaceTime call that brought London police to a woman's door came from thousands of miles away – from someone who witnessed the attack on a video screen.
Now, a jury just convicted her ex-boyfriend of assault anyway.
But not before the judge spent considerable time telling jurors to doubt the entire story, even though Barron Trump's emergency call is the reason police showed up at all.
Barron Trump's FaceTime Call To UK Police Rescued Woman From Domestic Violence Attack
Barron Trump placed a late-night FaceTime call to a woman he'd met on social media on January 18, 2025.
The call was answered by a shirtless man Trump didn't recognize.
That image lasted one second before the camera flipped to show the woman crying while being struck, speaking in Russian through tears.
Trump immediately phoned London's emergency line, telling operators he'd just witnessed his friend getting beaten.
The dispatcher demanded detailed answers about the victim while Trump tried to convey the urgency.
"I don't think these details matter, she's getting beat up," Trump said.
The operator shot back that if Trump wanted to help, he needed to "answer my questions clearly and precisely."
Police arrived at the address and arrested Matvei Rumiantsev, a 22-year-old London-based receptionist.
The woman later told officers she knew President Trump's son, and that Rumiantsev had attacked her out of jealousy over their friendship.
Rumiantsev testified in court that he was jealous of Trump but claimed he felt sorry for him because his girlfriend was leading Trump on.
Snaresbrook Crown Court Trial: Defense Attorney Challenged Video Call Witness Testimony
The trial in Snaresbrook Crown Court revealed a troubling pattern.
The victim testified Rumiantsev had been violent throughout their six-month relationship, including previous strangulation incidents.
She described being "on my knees begging" before Trump's call gave her a chance to stand back up, calling his intervention "a sign from God."
Defense attorney Sasha Wass attacked Trump's credibility without him ever appearing in court.
Wass argued Trump couldn't have known his friend had a boyfriend, questioned what he could possibly see in five or seven seconds of video, and claimed the woman exploited her connection to Trump to create jealousy in a "relationship full of dramas."
Justice Bennathan used Trump's absence to instruct jurors they should treat his accounts "with caution" because he hadn't been cross-examined.
The judge suggested Trump might not have actually witnessed assault at all – that perhaps he "jumped to this conclusion on the basis of her screams."
Bennathan also warned jurors that Trump's "perception was biased because he was close friends with" the victim.
London Assault Conviction: Jury Acquitted Jealous Boyfriend On Rape And Choking Charges
The jury reached a split verdict Wednesday.
Rumiantsev was convicted of assault and perverting the course of justice – he'd sent a letter from jail pressuring the victim to retract her allegations.
But jurors acquitted him of rape and choking related to the night Trump called police, plus a separate rape and assault allegation from November 2024.
The judge's repeated warnings about Trump's reliability may have influenced those acquittals.
Bodycam footage from that night showed officers discussing the unusual situation after arriving at the scene.
One officer noted the informant from America was "likely to be Donald Trump's son."
Officers asked the victim to call Trump back to verify the story.
Trump explained he'd expected "a nice hello or something" when picking up the call.
Instead he saw "a ceiling and could hear screaming," then "a guy's head on the phone, and then the camera turns to her crying and getting hit."
Trump told police "That view lasted maybe one second and I was racing with adrenaline" before the call ended and he contacted authorities.
Rumiantsev faces sentencing March 27.
The victim credited Trump with saving her life, but the judge made certain jurors knew not to trust the President's son too much – even though his call is what brought police to rescue her in the first place.
