James opened up on Theo Von's podcast "This Past Weekend" about a nightmare early-career road trip that most entertainers would bury deep and never speak of again.
He drove eight hours – alone – to play a single one-night stand-up gig that paid almost nothing once you factored in the gas and wear on the car.
That's the kind of hustle nobody celebrates, the kind of grind that happened long before King of Queens made him a household name, long before Paul Blart: Mall Cop made him a box-office star.
He checked into what he called a "crappy motel-type thing" with one plan: grab a quick nap before showtime.
He pulled back the blanket.
There was a roach.

The Hollywood crowd that spent decades sneering at Kevin James – too blue-collar, too Catholic, too nice, not edgy enough – is watching a man who put the blanket back and drove home do something they never expected.
He proved that decency, work ethic, and a willingness to sit in a parking lot rather than make excuses will outlast every cynical trend in this business.
The roach didn't stop him then.
