Kevin Costner's Hollywood career crashed and burned in spectacular fashion.
Now he's facing a humiliating reality.
And Kevin Costner could land this role after his Yellowstone exit went up in flames.
The Queen of Country is throwing Costner a lifeline when nobody else will. Reba McEntire's NBC sitcom Happy's Place wants Kevin Costner to play her dead father in flashback scenes. The cast pitched the idea during interviews promoting Season 2, which premieres November 7.
"We have a dream of seeing flashbacks to Happy," cast member Pablo Castelblanco told Us Weekly.¹ "Belissa really wants Kevin Costner."
Melissa Peterman, who plays Gabby on the show, backed the idea. She suggested flashback scenes showing each character's job interview at the restaurant.
"Do we ever really want to see Happy? I would love to," Peterman added.²
The timing couldn't be more perfect for Costner to accept. His career options aren't exactly overflowing at the moment.
Costner's $100 million gamble turned into Hollywood's biggest disaster
Costner bet everything on Horizon: An American Saga, his passion project Western film series. He literally mortgaged his Santa Barbara home to finance it. The four-film epic was supposed to prove everyone wrong who doubted him.
Nobody wanted it.
Horizon: Chapter 1 bombed at the box office in June 2024, making just $38 million against a $50 million budget. Warner Bros. pulled Chapter 2 from the release schedule. Production on Chapter 3 started but never finished. Chapter 4 hasn't even begun filming.
The Hollywood Reporter revealed Costner demanded investors cough up the cash after "nobody was jumping to buy his odyssey." He "obsessively pursued it" while his world on Yellowstone unraveled.³
Costner left Yellowstone in June 2024 to focus on Horizon. The show that revitalized his career – and made him wealthy again – became collateral damage for his Western dreams.
The Yellowstone exit turned nasty. Reports surfaced about Costner nearly getting into a physical altercation with co-star Wes Bentley on set. Creator Taylor Sheridan killed off Costner's character John Dutton by assassination in the opening of Season 5's final episodes.
"Kevin's tried to put a brave face on it, but there's no denying this real lack of love is bothering him," a source told Radar in January 2025.⁴ "He's been stabbed in the heart time and time again."
The Hollywood Reporter dropped another bombshell in October 2025. Multiple sources described Costner being "blackballed from Hollywood" following the Yellowstone drama and Horizon disaster.
Reba and Costner go way back to better times
McEntire and Costner actually have history. They starred together in the 1990 horror film Tremors, where McEntire played sharp-shooting Heather Gummer alongside Kevin Bacon.
That was 35 years ago when Costner was at the peak of his career. Dances with Wolves earned him Academy Awards for Best Director and Best Picture in 1991.
McEntire has publicly said she'd love to work with Costner again. In 2022, she told Yahoo she wanted to appear on Yellowstone with him. She even pitched a viral TikTok idea featuring both of them.⁵
Now Happy's Place is offering Costner a chance to reunite with McEntire. But it's not exactly the glamorous role he's used to.
Playing a dead father in sitcom flashbacks is a far cry from leading cable's biggest hit drama or directing $100 million Western epics.
The cast's use of "dream" language signals they know landing Costner is unlikely given his usual star status. But his usual star status doesn't exist anymore.
Costner's other option? Rex Linn told Us Weekly that John Lithgow wants to do the show but he's busy filming the Harry Potter series in London.⁶ Jean Smart is another possibility.
Those are legitimate television stars who don't carry Costner's baggage. They'd probably cost less too.
Here's what this really comes down to. Costner destroyed his career chasing a vanity project nobody wanted. He burned bridges with the most powerful creator in television. He risked his fortune on films that flopped spectacularly.
Now a feel-good NBC sitcom might be his best option. That's not a comeback story. That's a cautionary tale about ego destroying everything a second chance built.
Happy's Place Season 2 premieres November 7 on NBC at 8 PM EST.
