Ken Martin Said Three Words About the DNC Autopsy That Just Blew Up in His Face

Ken Martin ran for DNC chair by attacking Democrats for hiding their own failures.

Now he's the one hiding a 200-page report explaining why Kamala Harris lost – and his own words just caught up with him.

When a liberal podcast host asked Martin on camera why he broke his promise, the DNC chair couldn't answer.

The Moment He Can't Walk Back

When Martin ran for DNC chair in early 2025, he had a message: the party's refusal to release its 2016 autopsy on Hillary Clinton's loss was exactly what not to do.

He promised the 2024 review would be different.

His exact words: "Of course it will be released."

Jon Favreau – the Obama speechwriter who hosts Pod Save America, not a conservative critic – played those words back to Martin's face on live audio last month.

"Your exact quote was, 'Of course it will be released.' Why did you change your mind on that?" Favreau asked.

Martin's answer was ten minutes of spin that satisfied nobody.

He said releasing the 200-page report – built from over 300 interviews with Democrats across all 50 states – would cause "navel gazing."

He said there was "no smoking gun." He said people wanted to "weaponize" the findings.

Favreau had the perfect response: "If there's no smoking gun, why wouldn't you just release it then?"

Martin didn't have an answer.

What Democrats on Camera Are Saying

Congressional Democrats aren't waiting for Martin to find his spine.

"Why haven't we put it out? Because we got our butts kicked," Rep. Glenn Ivey said directly to reporters. "It's going to be embarrassing, apparently, to some people."

Rep. Rashida Tlaib was even blunter: "They messed up. They didn't listen to their Democratic base."

Even Kamala Harris – whose failed campaign is the subject of the buried report – publicly demanded its release, saying she had no problem with a full public airing of what went wrong.

Her own party chair is blocking it.

Jerry Nadler – 32-year House veteran, former Judiciary Committee chairman – said he has "no idea" why the report hasn't come out.

Think about what that tells you.

The DNC commissioned the review. They conducted 300 interviews. They wrote 200 pages.

Then the chair decided the people who paid for all of it – Democrat donors, voters, candidates – didn't need to read it.

The Real Reason This Report Stays Buried

Martin's stated rationale shifts depending on who's asking.

First it was a midterm distraction. Then it was navel gazing. Then there was no smoking gun.

Then lessons were being shared privately.

Then an executive summary was coming "in short order" – a promise he apparently made to DNC officers before Easter, according to NBC News, that also never materialized.

Every explanation contradicts the last one.

Here's what doesn't change: this report names the specific decisions, the specific people, and the specific failures that handed Donald Trump the most complete electoral victory Republicans have achieved in decades.

Trump won the popular vote. He flipped Latino men by double digits – a coalition Democrats spent 40 years building.

He won every swing state.

A 200-page document exists explaining how that happened.

And the man who promised to release it is now calling transparency "navel gazing."

Axios reported that advisers to potential 2028 presidential candidates believe suppressing the report shields Harris's campaign record from formal party scrutiny – clearing the field for her before a single primary vote is cast.

The DNC Is $18 Million in Debt and Hiding Why It Lost

The number Martin's spin can't explain away: the DNC finished March with $22.1 million cash on hand and $18.4 million in debt.

The Republican National Committee reported $116.8 million in the bank with zero debt.

The party hiding its own autopsy is also broke.

And the chair who buried the report calls that an "intentional strategy."

Republicans head into November with a unified party, a president passing his agenda through Congress, and a war chest that dwarfs the opposition.

Democrats head into November with a hidden report, a debt-ridden national committee, and a chair who spent $1 billion of donor money on Kamala Harris's campaign and now won't tell those same donors what went wrong.

Favreau – Obama's own speechwriter, a Democrat's Democrat – couldn't get a straight answer out of him.

Republicans don't need to read the 200-page report.

They watched every page of it play out on November 5, 2024.
