Kamala Harris Called a Court Ruling Antidemocratic and Nobody Laughed Harder Than Republicans

Democrats spent four years lecturing America about protecting democracy.

Now Kamala Harris is furious that a court actually followed the Constitution.

What she is not telling you is that she has been on the other side of this exact argument before – and she won.

Democrats Tried to Turn 6 Republican Seats Into 1

In April, Virginia Democrats put a redistricting referendum on the ballot.

Virginia's congressional map currently gives Democrats six seats and Republicans five.

The referendum would have flipped that to ten Democrat seats and one Republican seat – in a purple state Donald Trump nearly carried in 2024.

Democrats called this "the will of the people."

Republicans called it what it was: a power grab disguised as democracy.

The Virginia Supreme Court agreed.

In a 4-3 decision, the court found that Democrats violated Article XII, Section 1 of the Virginia Constitution – specifically how they rushed the redistricting proposal through the General Assembly.

Virginia law requires a constitutional amendment to pass the legislature twice, with a full election sandwiched in between, before it can go to voters.

Democrats passed it the first time in October 2025 – while early voting for the general election was already underway.

Justice D. Arthur Kelsey called that move "unprecedented" and wrote that it left the resulting referendum vote null and void.

They didn't lose on policy.

They lost because they cheated on the procedure.

The Prop 8 Problem Nobody Is Talking About

Here is what makes Harris's outrage breathtaking.

In 2008, California voters approved Proposition 8, which amended the state constitution to define marriage as between a man and a woman.

Seven million Californians voted for it.

Courts struck it down anyway.

As California's attorney general, Kamala Harris refused to defend Prop 8 in court – a voter-approved constitutional amendment – because she personally disagreed with it.

She celebrated when federal courts overturned what voters had decided.

She never called that antidemocratic.

She never said those courts "ignored the will of the people."

Now a Virginia court has blocked a constitutional amendment that violated state procedural rules, and suddenly Harris has discovered a deep reverence for ballot box results.

The principle she is applying is simple: courts should enforce votes that help Democrats and ignore everything else.

What This Really Means for 2026

Republican National Committee Chair Joe Gruters put it plainly after the ruling: "Democrats just learned that when you try to rig elections, you lose."

He's right – and the numbers tell the story.

This wasn't about fairness. Virginia's bipartisan redistricting commission – which Democrats themselves put on the ballot in 2020 – already drew the current map giving Democrats a 6-5 edge.

Democrats wanted to scrap their own commission, hand mapmaking back to the legislature they controlled, and use it to eliminate four Republican seats before November.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries claimed the court had "disenfranchised" three million voters.

But Jeffries knows that courts void voter-approved measures for constitutional violations constantly – and Democrats have cheered every single time it worked in their favor.

Harris told her followers the ruling "gives a boost to Donald Trump's efforts to rig the 2026 elections."

Think about what she is actually saying.

A state Supreme Court enforced its own constitution, blocked a map that would have handed Democrats nine of eleven congressional seats in a competitive state, and Harris is calling that rigging.

The word she is looking for is "losing."

Democrats lost. The court said so. The Constitution said so.

The woman who spent years celebrating courts overturning voter-approved measures she disagreed with now wants those same courts to sit down and be quiet.

Your 2026 ballot is safer today than it was last week – because four Virginia Supreme Court justices read the state constitution and did their jobs.
