The Washington Post spent years lecturing America about threats to democracy from people who don't trust the press.
Then Trump walked out of a Meet the Press interview, and Jon Stewart aimed his fire at NBC.
What he said was so damaging that even his own audience couldn't ignore it.
Stewart Called Welker's Plea the Worst Moment in Journalism History
When President Trump stood up, crushed his lapel mic underfoot, and told Kristen Welker "thank you, darling, have a good time" – she had one last chance to hold the line.
She didn't take it.
Instead, Welker called after him: "Mr. President, let's … please, I traveled all the way to Wisconsin."

Stewart lit her up on The Daily Show the very next night.
"This is where Kristen Welker nearly undoes all of the good work she did with one of the worst pleas in the history of journalism," Stewart said.
He then did a mock impression: "You can't leave, sir! I was in business class! Mr. President, please, Wisconsin, 'Wheel of Fortune' is on an hour earlier here."
The audience laughed.
But the point underneath the joke was exactly what conservatives have been saying for thirty years.
Begging a president for access is not journalism.
It is access preservation dressed up as journalism.
The Rain Excuse Made It Worse
Welker didn't stop at the Wisconsin plea.
Throughout the interview – multiple times before Trump ever stood up – she had been acknowledging the sound of rain on the barn's metal roof, noting it was making it difficult for both of them to hear.
Trump played along at one point, agreeing there was "a lot of rain."
Then he walked out.
And NBC's framing left the rain hanging in the air as partial explanation.
Stewart erupted.
"You were inside! There was no challenge from the rain!"
Trump didn't storm out because of ambient farm noise.
He sat in that barn for an hour while NBC pressed him on the $1.8 billion weaponization fund, on election integrity, on January 6.
He told Welker exactly why he was leaving: "A country can never be great with a dishonest press."
Stewart called it what it was.
"Donald Trump didn't storm out because of the rain. He stormed out because he was challenged, not because he was distracted. So maybe it's time we stop making excuses for that man in order to preserve access to his constant bulls—."
Conservatives have waited twenty years for a mainstream media voice to say that out loud.
This Is What Access Journalism Has Always Looked Like
What happened in that Wisconsin barn is not new.
Nixon's press secretary Ron Ziegler perfected the art of stonewalling – and watched reporters accept it and come back the next day.
The Reagan White House turned manufactured access into a science, rewarding compliant journalists and freezing out anyone who pushed back.
Every administration since has played the same game.
The difference now is that Trump doesn't quietly freeze anyone out.

He names them, calls them crooked, and walks off camera in real time – and the press corps still reaches for a weather excuse.
Welker's "I traveled all the way to Wisconsin" exposed the core of access journalism in eight words.
She wasn't thinking about accountability.
She was thinking about the next interview.
NBC Already Agreed to Let Trump Come Back
Trump was right about the press the entire time.
He said NBC was more interested in access than in honest coverage.
Then NBC proved it by scheduling a second interview before the news cycle had even cooled.
Stewart asked the right question: "What are the odds that the result of that interview will be any different?"
Nothing will be different – because the incentives haven't changed.
NBC needs Trump more than Trump needs NBC.
And it took a liberal comedian to say it.
