America watched Joey Chestnut put a Darth Vader protester in a headlock at Coney Island and cheered.
Now the same man just pleaded guilty to slapping a stranger across the face at a bar at 2 in the morning.
The victim wasn't a protester rushing the stage – he was a fan who just shook Chestnut's hand.
The Bar Incident That Surveillance Cameras Caught
It happened March 21 at Joe's Grille in Westfield, Indiana – Chestnut's hometown.
Just before 2 a.m., a man walked up and shook Chestnut's hand.
Then Chestnut's demeanor changed.
He turned and slapped the man across the face.
Westfield Police officers reviewed surveillance footage from the bar and watched the whole thing play out.
When they questioned Chestnut, he told them he was "pretty drunk" and didn't remember any of it.

He told police he must have been set off by something the man said – but he had no idea what.
Hamilton County Prosecutor Josh Kocher told local radio that the charge level tracks with the injury and the relationship between the parties.
Chestnut pleaded guilty to two counts of Class B misdemeanor battery – one of the lowest-level misdemeanor charges under Indiana law.
He was sentenced April 20 to 180 days in jail with all of it suspended, plus 180 days of probation running through October.
The Champion Who Keeps Getting In His Own Way
This is not the first time Chestnut's hands have made news.
In 2022, a protester in a Darth Vader mask rushed the stage at the Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest on Coney Island.
Chestnut – mid-competition, wearing a medical boot from a ruptured tendon – put the man in a headlock and dropped him to the ground, then went right back to eating.
The crowd loved it.
The internet exploded.
Chestnut became a folk hero for two days.
That protester was an activist deliberately disrupting a public event.

The guy at Joe's Grille shook his hand.
Then came 2024 – Major League Eating banned him from the Nathan's contest entirely over a plant-based hot dog sponsorship deal.
He fought his way back, won his 17th title in 2025, and now he's serving probation while training for his 18th.
He'll Be at Coney Island on July 4 Anyway
A judge granted Chestnut permission to travel outside Indiana, so the Coney Island competition is on.
He also just won the 2026 Ultimate Bologna Showdown in Knoxville, Tennessee – 16 pounds of bologna in 8 minutes, a new world record.
His attorney Mario Massillamany called it "an isolated misunderstanding rather than anything more serious."
