Washington, D.C.’s “Swamp” is overflowing with corruption.
But one massive scam was ripping off taxpayers.
Now Joe Biden is in panic mode after this illegal government scheme was exposed.
The federal government spent trillions of dollars propping up the economy during the pandemic.
Hastily-passed bills turned on the spigot of federal money without proper oversight.
Forgivable loans and other programs were passed to help workers whose jobs were affected because of the government mandated shutdowns.
Potentially $50 billion in pandemic relief was sent to scammers making it one of the biggest frauds in history.
Tens of thousands of federal government workers got in on the scam according to Sen. Joni Ernst (R-IA).
The Iowa Senator is asking the Pandemic Response Accountability Committee (PARC) to “recover the money that was ripped off, and grant each of those who took advantage of taxpayers by collecting jobless benefits their wish to be unemployed.”
Government employees in some cases were working from home while illegally collecting unemployment checks, claiming to be out of work.
“It is appalling for anyone fortunate enough to have the reliability of a government paycheck to take advantage of financial assistance intended to provide a lifeline to Americans who lost their jobs or were unable to work as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic,” Ernst continued.
Throughout the federal government, internal watchdogs have identified a disturbing number of incidents of highly-paid federal employees ripping off the government.
The Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) Inspector General discovered nearly 2,000 applications for unemployment and “Lost Wage Assistance” that matched the names of employees working at the agency.
In some cases, the DHS employees named were working overtime while filing for unemployment.
While some of the fraud during the pandemic was from identity theft, the inspector general found that some of the unemployment claims were filled out on DHS computers.
Auditors admitted that the Lost Wage Assistance was enacted quickly without proper fraud prevention measures.
“Employees of other federal agencies, including the Internal Revenue Service, Amtrak, and the U.S. Postal Service have also been caught fraudulently collecting unemployment payments, despite being on the federal payroll,” Ernst noted.
Last year, the Justice Department charged five IRS employees with stealing over one million dollars that was spent on “cars, luxury goods, and personal travel, including trips to Las Vegas.”
The current theft by federal workers could only be the tip of the iceberg.
The inspector general for the Small Business Administration (SBA) admitted that the quickly implemented pandemic relief programs had so few anti-fraud protections, that very few of the suspected cases were ever investigated.
In a report to congress, PARC revealed that by matching names of federal employees with pandemic relief programs that “tens of thousands of employees” in six federal agencies that were ineligible received relief.
Corrupt federal workers used the pandemic to rip off taxpayers who fund their generous salaries.
