Illinois city official who embezzled $52 million has sentence commuted by Biden
President Joe Biden committed the largest act of clemency in American history when he commuted the sentences of nearly 1,500 criminals and issued 39 pardons.
The White House celebrated the move as an act of mercy for nonviolent criminals who paid their debt to society.
Biden let a corrupt politician go free who committed what the FBI called the biggest case of municipal fraud in American history.
71-year-old Rita Crundwell served as the comptroller and treasurer of Dixon, Illinois, from 1983 to 2012.
She stole more than $52 million from the city of about 15,000 people west of Chicago during that time.
Crundwell used a phony account named Reserve Sewer Capital Development Account that she moved city money into.
She blamed the city’s poor finances on late payments from Illinois and a bad economy.
Her crimes were discovered in 2011 when someone was filling in for her while she was on vacation.
Crundwell pleaded guilty in 2013 to wire fraud.
The stolen taxpayer money was used to buy real estate, luxury vehicles, and run her horse breeding business.
Dixon city manager Danny Langloss, who was the city’s police chief when Crundwell was busted, was outraged that Biden commuted her sentence.
“Rita’s crime absolutely shocks the conscience . . . at her sentencing on February 14th, 2013, [the judge] said that a significant prison sentence was essential to re-establish public trust and confidence, so what we’ve seen here over the last week is just unbelievable and really a complete betrayal by the federal criminal justice system,” Langloss told Fox & Friends First.
Even Democrats were outraged at Biden for the decision.
Representative Eric Sorensen (D-IL) was astonished that Biden granted her clemency.
“Rita Crundwell was just granted clemency,” Sorensen wrote on X. “This, after swindling Dixon, Illinois residents out of $54 Million over decades. She pleaded guilty, got the max sentence, but only served 8 years. Her case remains the biggest municipal fraud case in U.S. history. Getting off scot free today is such a load of BS,”
White House brags about freeing one of America’s biggest scam artists
The White House put out a statement that celebrated the “historic acts of clemency,” like freeing Crundwell.
It claimed that the criminals Biden pardoned and commuted the sentences for had successfully reintegrated themselves into the community.
“These actions build on the President’s record of criminal justice reform to help reunite families, strengthen communities, and reintegrate individuals back into society. The President has issued more sentence commutations at this point in his presidency than any of his recent predecessors at the same point in their first terms,” the White House claimed.
White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters that Biden’s clemency was about giving “second chances.”
