House Republicans finally agreed on a candidate and elected a new Speaker on Wednesday.
Republican Representative Mike Johnson (R-LA) is the new Speaker of the House.
And Joe Biden described the new Republican Speaker by three words that put a smile on Donald Trump’s face.
It’s been over three weeks since Matt Gaetz (R-FL) led a successful motion to vacate the chair and remove Kevin McCarthy as House Speaker for going back on the promises he made to conservatives in January.
Without a Speaker, House rules did not allow members to conduct official business.
Conservatives initially tried to elect Jim Jordan as Speaker but a coalition of RINOs refused to vote for him and ended his quest.
But that didn’t stop Republicans from battling it out for more than three weeks before finally settling on Mike Johnson as the new Speaker.
Johnson was elected as the 56th Speaker of the House in a unanimous vote among Republicans, making him the first to be unanimously elected by his conference since 2011.
Donald Trump’s “strong suggestion” to “go with the leading candidate, Mike Johsnon, & GET IT DONE, FAST” helped seal the deal for Johnson’s bid to become Speaker.
Joe Biden’s Presidential campaign reacted to the news with fury.
In a statement, Biden referred to the new Speaker as “MAGA Mike Johnson.”
“MAGA Mike Johnson’s ascension to the speakership cements the extreme MAGA takeover of the House Republican Conference,” Biden’s campaign wrote in a statement. “Now, Donald Trump has his loyal foot soldier to ban abortion nationwide, lead efforts to deny free and fair election results, gut Social Security and Medicare, and advance the extreme MAGA agenda at the expense of middle-class families.”
Biden campaign spokesman Ammar Moussa ripped Johnson and gave Trump credit for his victory.
“MAGA House Republicans elevated a man to be second-in-line to the presidency who still won’t admit President Biden won the 2020 election,” Moussa said. “The American people have rejected the extreme MAGA ideology at the ballot box because they understand what’s at stake,” he continued, before adding “and so to every MAGA Republican who supported this choice: We’ll see you in November.”
Congress has another government shutdown looming on November 17.
And hopefully Speaker Johnson will force House members to vote on individual spending bills and not another Continuing Resolution.
