Fighting between factions of rebels in Syria has American officials worried that 9,000 ISIS terrorists could be released from jails in Syria.
American-backed Kurdish forces in Syria have been guarding ISIS terrorists in makeshift prisons.
These are fighters from the Islamic State whose home countries wouldn’t take them after the caliphate collapsed.
A long-running conflict between an alleged American ally in Turkey and Kurdish forces is heating up in post-Assad Syria.
“I usually hate this cliche, but this is the closest thing we have to a ticking time bomb,” a senior American counterterrorism official told Politico. “If Turkey doesn’t get these attacks on the [Syrian Democratic Forces] halted, we could have a massive jailbreak on our hands.”
The Turkish-backed Syrian Democratic Forces launched a major offensive into Syrian territory held by the American-backed Kurdish-Syrian Democratic Forces.
Fighters with the Kurdish Syrian Democratic Forces are guarding the ISIS terrorists and 50,000 other people like wives and children in what were supposed to be temporary jails until a permanent solution could be found.
Freed prisoners could lead to an ISIS revival
Turkey has had a long-running conflict with the Kurdish minority in its country and views the Kurdish Syrian Democratic Forces as a terrorist group.
Turkey’s proxy in Syria, the Syrian Democratic Forces, launched a major offensive against the Kurdish group since Assad’s regime collapsed.
Retired Army General Joseph Votel was the head of United States Central Command from 2016 to 2019 during the fight against ISIS under Trump.
“This is essentially a terrorist army in detention,” Votel said. “I am very concerned.”
Poorly armed Kurdish fighters are guarding battled hardened ISIS terrorists in what were supposed to be temporary facilities.
The ISIS terrorists hail from countries around the world including the United States and there’s been a permanent solution to deal with them if their home countries wouldn’t take them back.
So they’ve been guarded by Kurdish forces for years.
The Biden-Harris administration is hoping for a ceasefire between the groups.
“We don’t want to see any party take advantage of the current unstable situation to advance their own narrow interests at the expense of the broader Syrian national interest,” State Department spokesman Matt Miller said.
There are around 900 American soldiers in Syria who could be caught in the crossfire.
“This is something that can unravel fast,” New Lines Institute Syria expert Caroline Rose said. “The potential risks are not only to our partners, but also the U.S. soldiers that are on the ground carrying out this advise-and-assist mission.”
