George W Bush called it a "thumping."
Now Democrats are licking their chops at the same scenario playing out in 2026.
But JD Vance just told the Daily Mail something that should make every Republican take a breath before panicking over November.
What Vance Actually Said
The vice president sat down for an exclusive interview this week after campaigning in North Carolina for Senate candidate Michael Whatley – who trails Roy Cooper by as much as 12 points in recent polling.
Vance was asked flat out: what is your worst nightmare for November 4?
His answer was not what the mainstream media wanted to hear.
"I just don't think 2006 is on the table," Vance said.
Two reasons, he told the Daily Mail.
First: the Democrats running in 2026 are far more radical than anything the party fielded twenty years ago.
Second: Republicans have a real record to run on.
In 2006, Bush was three years into a quagmire in Iraq with no end in sight and thousands of American troops dead.
The Iran situation, Vance argues, is categorically different – a conflict now past six months, yes, but not a decade-long occupation bleeding the country dry.
"Even Americans who disagree with us on the Iran situation, I think most of them would accept this is not anything close to Iraq," Vance said.
The Democrats Running in 2026 Are Not Bill Clinton
Here is the argument Vance is actually making – and it is sharper than the media coverage suggests.
In 2006, Democrats ran as moderates.
They recruited candidates who could credibly claim they were not Nancy Pelosi.
It did not work – voters still handed Pelosi the Speaker's gavel anyway – but the strategy gave Democrats cover in red-leaning districts.
In 2026, Roy Cooper cannot credibly claim to be a moderate.

Vance laid it out in North Carolina: Cooper, as governor, vetoed voter ID requirements.
Cooper vetoed legislation to clean up state voter rolls.
Cooper vetoed parental rights protections for children in schools.
Every time he had to choose between doing the obvious thing and appeasing the radical left activists who run his party, Cooper chose the activists.
"Give Roy Cooper a choice between upsetting the crazies and doing his job, and he will side with the crazies every single time," Vance said from the stage.
The Media Wants You to Think It's Already Over
The mainstream press is already writing the obituary.
Kalshi prediction markets – which CNN and MSNBC are treating like gospel – put Democrats' odds of taking the Senate at 64 percent.
The House odds are even more dramatic: 91 percent for a Democratic flip.
Here is what those numbers actually are: a snapshot of a media environment that has spent twenty months telling you Trump is losing, the economy is collapsing, and America hates what it voted for.
They told you the same thing in 2024.
Sherrod Brown – who already lost his Senate seat in 2024 – is somehow back in Ohio and being treated like a savior.
Roy Cooper is up nearly ten points on average in North Carolina, according to polls from the same outlets that missed 2016, missed 2020, and missed the red wave that swept through the House in 2022.
Take a breath.
What November Actually Depends On
The 2026 Republican base watched four years of Biden destroy the border, flood communities with fentanyl, let biological males dominate women's sports, and hand a president who could not complete a sentence control over the nuclear codes.
They did not forget.
Vance traveled to Michigan, Texas, Kansas, Iowa, Ohio, and Maine in just the last month – not because the party is panicking, but because Republicans who show up win.
Brown cannot pretend he did not spend two decades in the Senate advancing every leftist priority that made your grocery bill double.
This is not 2006 – where a demoralized Republican base stayed home because they had nothing to vote for.
In 2026, every conservative in America knows exactly what comes back the moment Democrats take that gavel: open borders, radical gender ideology in schools, and two years of congressional investigations designed to destroy the president you elected.
Show up, and Vance is right.
That is the only poll that matters.
