James Comer Asked Senate Republicans One Question and It Silenced the Room

The House has passed Trump's voter ID bill three times.

Now a senior Republican is demanding to know why Senate colleagues won't do the same.

Comer just told every Senate Republican exactly what their vote against voter ID makes them.

The House Has Done Its Job Three Times Over

House Oversight Chairman James Comer went on Fox News Sunday and said what a lot of conservatives have been thinking.

"Are you that weak?" Comer said directly to any Senate Republican too scared to vote for basic voter ID. "To where if you vote for a valid ID to be shown to vote, you're gonna get beat in your home state? I mean, if you're that weak, you don't need to be a United States senator."

That's not a talking point.

That's a verdict.

The House has passed the SAVE America Act three times now – 218-213 in February, twice more since then – and Speaker Mike Johnson just announced he'll pass it a fourth time through budget reconciliation.

Senate Republicans, meanwhile, can't get to 50 votes.

Not 60 to break the filibuster.

Fifty.

Comer said he doesn't believe Thune's claim that even a simple majority has evaporated.

"Not only do they not have 60 votes, they don't have 50 votes – which I don't believe that," Comer said. "I hope that the Senate will get it together and figure out something that we can pass to give the American people confidence in the integrity of the elections."

Four Republicans Are Handing Democrats a Win

The names aren't a mystery anymore.

When Lindsey Graham put SAVE America on a reconciliation amendment in June, it failed 48-50.

Four Senate Republicans – Susan Collins, Lisa Murkowski, Mitch McConnell, and Thom Tillis – joined every single Democrat to kill it.

That's not a Democrat problem.

That's a Republican problem.

Murkowski announced her opposition in February, citing state's rights concerns.

Tillis has been more blunt – he told a North Carolina newspaper last week the bill is "dead" without 60 votes.

Meanwhile, the bill's core requirement – that Americans prove they're citizens before they vote – polls at 75% support nationwide, including among most Democrats.

John Kennedy tried to add it to reconciliation in April. Kennedy's amendment failed 48-50 – the same four Republicans, the same result.

Trump used his Fourth of July speech on the National Mall to demand it again. "We want to keep America great, and we will do so by approving the SAVE America Act."

The Senate didn't move.

This Is a Pattern, Not a Fluke

The House has now passed some version of federal voter ID three confirmed times since 2025.

Every single time, the Senate has killed it – without consequences for the four Republicans doing the killing.

Two reconciliation pushes.

Two 48-50 failures.

Collins, Murkowski, McConnell, and Tillis voting with every Democrat on a bill that three-quarters of the country supports.

This is not legislative complexity.

This is a small group of Republicans deciding their political comfort matters more than election integrity – and doing it repeatedly and predictably.

The Senate parliamentarian has also ruled that voter ID provisions don't qualify for the reconciliation process, since they fall outside budget scope.

Trump has called for firing her. Thune has refused.

Comer sees it clearly.

If Republican senators won't vote for voter ID because they're afraid of losing their seat, they've already told you everything you need to know about how they prioritize the conservative base that put them there.

Trump called it his number one priority.

He told congressional Republicans in the spring: "It will guarantee the midterms. If you don't get it, big trouble."

Four Republicans heard that and voted no anyway.

That's not a weakness.

That's a choice.
