The ska-punk legends finally have a worthy successor to their iconic sound.
And Jakob Nowell delivered one jaw-dropping single that has Sublime fans celebrating like it’s 1996.
The torch has officially been passed to Bradley Nowell’s son
The music world held its breath when Jakob Nowell stepped into his father’s shoes as Sublime’s frontman in 2023.
Critics wondered if the 30-year-old could possibly fill the massive void left by Bradley Nowell, who died of a heroin overdose in 1996 at the height of the band’s popularity.
Yesterday marked the end of all doubts with the release of "Ensenada," Sublime’s first completely original track featuring Jakob on lead vocals.
The single dropped yesterday morning and it’s already sending shockwaves through the alternative rock community. This isn’t some nostalgic cash grab or karaoke tribute – this is the real deal.
Jakob doesn’t just sound like his legendary father; he might actually be better. And that’s not hyperbole – that’s the consensus emerging from music critics and longtime fans who’ve been waiting for this moment since the Clinton administration.
"Ensenada" captures the classic Sublime magic with a fresh twist
The track delivers all the elements that made Sublime iconic in the ’90s: that unmistakable reggae groove, the laid-back West Coast atmosphere, and the turntable work that became their signature sound.
But Jakob brings his own distinctive charm and charisma to the equation, giving the group new energy while honoring their impressive legacy.
"I’m excited because it has so much authenticity to it," Jakob told VICE about the new single. "Part of making a Sublime song is that you have to be sincere and irreverent at the same time."¹
The song tackles themes of love, relationships, and emotional escape – classic Sublime territory. But Jakob approaches these subjects with a maturity that reflects his own life experiences while maintaining the band’s trademark wit and irreverence.
"The lyrics were inspired by our various encounters with love and how we feel. Sometimes things go south, and you want to lash out in different ways," Jakob explained.²
The production work by Jon Joseph of BØRNS and recording at Harbor Martyr Studios in San Pedro captured that authentic Sublime sound that fans have been craving for decades.
Original band members Bud Gaugh and Eric Wilson – who Jakob affectionately calls his "uncles" – provide the rhythmic foundation that made Sublime legendary.
The new Sublime is already making waves across the industry
This isn’t Jakob’s first time performing with Sublime, but "Ensenada" represents a watershed moment for the band.
His history-making debut as frontman came at Coachella 2024, where he proved he could command the stage with the same magnetic presence that made his father a legend.
Since then, the reformed Sublime has been on a tear. They’ve performed at over 20 festivals and shows across North America, made their late-night television debut on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, and recorded a four-song set for the Howard Stern Show.
Their 2024 single "Feel Like That" – which featured vocals from both Jakob and archival recordings of Bradley – became their first top 10 hit on alternative radio since 1997.
But "Ensenada" is different. This is pure Jakob Nowell, backed by the legendary rhythm section that helped define ’90s alternative rock.
The timing couldn’t be better. With the band set to perform at the Vans Warped Tour in their hometown of Long Beach on July 26 – nearly 30 years after the original lineup played the first incarnation of the festival – this single serves as a perfect reintroduction.
Jakob’s approach honors his father while charting new territory
What makes Jakob’s take on Sublime so compelling is his understanding that this isn’t about imitation – it’s about continuation.
"You can’t match something from that 90s era – it was such a moment in time. This feels like an epilogue, a thank you to all of the fans and everyone who’s supported Sublime," Jakob said.³
"Our goal with ‘Ensenada’ was not to replicate anything, but from my perspective its more like a tribute to my uncles Bud and Eric and the inspiration they give me."⁴
The emotional weight of carrying on his father’s legacy isn’t lost on Jakob. "I poured a lot of myself into this record and at times it was very emotionally challenging. The entire time we’re working on it, [it’s] like my Dad was there, it’s like I could feel his presence."⁵
That spiritual connection comes through in every note of "Ensenada." The song manages to capture the essence of what made Sublime special while pointing toward an exciting future for the band.
This isn’t some desperate attempt to recapture past glory – this is a band with something to prove and the talent to back it up.
The summer anthem that signals Sublime’s triumphant return
"Ensenada" is already generating buzz as this summer’s breakout track – an upbeat anthem perfect for pool parties and weekend barbecues across the country.
"I hope that people will put ‘Ensenada’ on in the Summer time and dance around," Jakob said, and early reactions suggest that’s exactly what’s happening.
But the impact goes beyond just commercial success. For nearly three decades, Sublime has been defined by their legendary past rather than their potential future. Jakob’s emergence as frontman changes that dynamic completely.
The upcoming album – their first since the 1996 self-titled record that was released shortly after Bradley’s death – is being produced with Travis Barker and John Feldmann, signaling the band’s serious commitment to this new chapter.
"Travis is an old-school fan and scholar of the Sublime catalog," Jakob explained. "They feel like family members now too, man. There was that feeling from everyone that what we’re doing here is something generational and special on an emotional, spiritual, familial level."⁷
A new generation discovers the magic of Sublime
Jakob’s vision for Sublime extends far beyond nostalgia. He sees the band as a vehicle for introducing a new generation to the power of alternative music.
"Reaching young audiences is what alternative music is supposed to do—it’s supposed to give you an escape and a purpose, and let you know that there’s someone tending the light at the end of that big long tunnel," he told VICE.⁸
"What makes me most excited is the prospect for the future and building with Sublime an entire new resurgence of west coast alternative music—a scene here in Southern California."⁹
That vision is already becoming reality. The band’s upcoming tour schedule includes major festivals like Sea.Hear.Now in Asbury Park, New Jersey, and Shaky Knees in Atlanta, Georgia.
They’re also staging a four-day takeover at Park MGM Las Vegas between August 14-17 called "Fear, Loathing, and Sublime in Las Vegas," featuring performances alongside punk powerhouses Pennywise and The Vandals.¹⁰
The fact that Jakob can command these stages and draw both longtime fans and new converts speaks to his authenticity as an artist and his understanding of what made Sublime special.
This isn’t a tribute act – this is the evolution of a legendary band that’s found new life through the next generation of the Nowell family.
